how many of those vehicle with blown motors at the track had oil leaks.. even the slightest?

I think I would've saved all the trouble and just shaped it with a rubber mallet and a sandbag.

The steel is quite thick through the buldge. Strecthing it out would involve more work use any oxy to heat and shrink it than actually cutting a patch. The patch will also be stronger than streched section of the buldge.

Agreed, X2.

Innovative, clever, and looks like it's a lot less expensive than oil starvation.

You also picked up an extra half-ounce of oil capacity.
