Possible Reasons Why VVL not Activiating?

What are all the possible reasons why vvl would not engage?

Specific case here:

A friend of mine car.

N15 Pulsar VZ-R

SR20ve with SR16ve ecu

2.25" exhaust.

With that ecu the intake should come in at 5800 rpm and the exhaust cam should come in at 6800 rpm.

You feel a lil kick at 5800 and also hear it (muffler is very quiet), but you dont hear or feel the exhaust come in. Why?

We checked the solenoid and it's working. We even swapped it to confirm.

He also checked the wires from ecu to solenoid and found no fault.

Could it be the ecu?

Well on the matter of the 16ve ecu running a 20ve motor, I told him he may be running at about 17:1 AFR, but he is in the process of sorting it out. Could this contributing to the problem?

Thanks for you input.

Peace

send him to and electrician............. or pull down the ecu and look for the pin out for the exhaust cam and then use a tester to see if the ecu is sending out the negative side..... also put straight voltage on the solonoid to make sure that it no get screwd somehow

click on electronics and u will see the pin out of the ve ecu........ its for the 20 but i think its the same

Solenoid clogged?

or bad temp sensor. I'm sure engine temp is part of the conditions for the ecu to allow the vvl to switch on. Unless when it's cold u can hit vvl right away.

Check pin configuration between 20ve and 16ve...

maybe start simple do your solenoids click if you short them out? if no then look into ecu issues, check code for temp sender maybe do this first even...

If Vvl Solenoids Dont Turn On And Youve Swap Out Solenoids.. Then... Ecu Is Questionable..
