SR20VE Build-Up Plans
Hello, my name is Terry.

This was my project: http://www.sr20forum.com/all-motor/191654-sr20de-build-up.html

I made a number of mistakes in taking on this project which I do not care to repeat. for that reason, i am making this thread, to hear criticism of my plans BEFORE I execute them.

as it stands, I own a stock(motor wise) 1995 200SX SE-R. I have commited to buying a stock SR20VE and enjoying it in stock form for a year, at the end of which I will begin a build-up.

The car will be used for auto-X and weekend track events as well as a summer daily driver.

This is the plan:

1.) flat top forged CP pistons which i now own due to the failed DE prject I started nearly a year ago. they are stock bore. I have been told they will only clear the valves on a VE if i use stock 20VE cams. I want to have valve reliefs cut using an SR16 piston as a template. according to Andreas Miko, this setup should be around 11.3:1 compression. I still have to contact CP and find out what alloy was used to determine what kind of a piston to cylinder wall clearance I want. I also want to get them friction coated.

2.) stock rods with ARP rod bolts.

3.) I'm not sure which crank to use? more people here swear by the 8cw then the 4cw, but owners of high revving 4cw's say they're not that bad. does anybody have any driving impressions of the 4cw? does it really rev that much faster to make it worth using? I'm looking for reliability and responsiveness, not peak numbers on this build.

4.) Should I use a girdle?

5.) I have ARP main studs. can I use them without having to align hone? should I use them?

6.) should I use a crank scraper or windage tray?

7.) I have ARP head studs for an SR20DE(T) do they fit the VE?

8.) I ordered a Cometic headgasket without specifying which SR it was for. it has the part number GAGC4283-040 which i believe is S14 specific. is this useless?

9.) I have a greddy e manage blue, i want to use it to fine tune and get my stock DE ecu sent to calum to be re-mapped for the VE.

10.) I'm looking to make my power between 6000 - 8000 RPM with an 8300 RPM rev limit. what cam would let me accomplish this assuming I'm using a custom 4-1 exhaust header?

11.) what kind of headwork is most effective on the VE? can N1 port work be duplicated on a normal VE head?

As i stated, the goal is reliability and responsiveness with a powerband in the top end.

This build up will not happen for some time, but I want to be prepared, with well informed decisions and the right parts. all criticism is appreciated and encouraged.

1 do you have to use those pistons?
2 stock rods and rod bolts would be fine
3 it's all opinion i say 8cw with girdle
4 see above
5 stock mains
6 get the scraper
7 don't use them
8 stock vet headgasket
9 calum ecu don't worry about the greddy
10 N1 cams
11 port match everything 3 angle valve job some will have suggestion on bowl work

12 Balance your entire bottom end, flywheel included

what is wrong with using headstuds?

main studs were my greatest concern. i was told that I would have to align hone if i were going to use main studs. i was also told that align honing an SR is extremely difficult.

i dont really feel there is anything wrong with the atp headstuds, personally i am using them on my boosted application making 270bhp and i plan on using them when i push 400+ so i dont really see a problem some people recomend stock some people recomend other companies like arp matter of opinion i think
