You will make more Hp with the crankcase/valvetrain hooked up to the intake manifold creating as much vacuum as possible in there. As well as reduce blow-by.

This is temporary untill i figure a way to run the lines clean ..im throwing on a vvl valve cover(removed the vvl badge) on my u13 de and im not gonna just have a open hose..

For temp use I use a rag or t-shirt held on by a rubber band or zip tie or something. I too have looked for a filter of that size and everything at Autozone is much too small. I think there's a popular filter used for BOVs that should work great. I think it's an AEM filter usually found online only. Maybe Summit?
