Thread: Throttle screw strikes again

I had friend with a spec V and he lucked out when it happened to him. He heard all this racket and sure enough it was the screw but all he had to do was fish it out of the cylinder with a magnet. It some how never jammed any of the valves but it was perfectly molded into a BB sized sphere. WILD. Sucks though.

Ok, here's the low down on why the VE throttle body screws are coming loose. You can't blame it all on the screws. In fact, they are the same screws used in most Nissan's throttle bodies. Most of the blame lies with the VE throttle shaft(black shaft you see in pics). The shaft is made out of a metal graphite matrix making it brittle and prone to cracking. It also has a different heat expansion rate than the metal screws. Over time and many heat cycles, the screws work themselves loose.

Solutions:
1. Locktite or JB weld(making it permenant) the screws.
2. Get a DE throttle body(without the black throttle shaft) and call it a day.

I prefer the second. With solution number one, by taking the screws off and on, you run the risk of further damaging the brittle/fragile throttle shaft.

Another option after red locktite, cut the screws and stake the ends with a sharp pointed punch. Just do not bend the shaft. A trick I learned back in the sidedraft carb days.

This is what happens when the throttle is not adjusted right. When you go to WOT and the throttle body stops on the screw but your pedal is not at the stop at the same time, you are applying leverage to the throttle shaft that was not meant to be there. This will make the throttle shaft slowly bend over time. It will pivot off of the bearing and then will flex at the screw in the plate. This will cause it to loosen up over time.
