Thread: Project: Stroker baby 101 - on the cheap!

Yes - its a thread in VVL section. So as you can guess, its project VE stroker and overbore on its way. Ill be documenting everything i do in here. This project is my own goal, my own drive, and im going to do it my way. I want to do it safely, engineer it myself and do what others havnt been able to do on a good budget.


Anyway enough of the dribble.

Ive been able to source a crank direct from the manufacturer that makes the cranks for tomei. Its 91mm stroke, knife edged and in full weight tips the scales at 16.89kilos.

I am using honda B16A rods. I will machine the big end to accept the larger SR bearing. The pin boss end will also have to be machined out to accept the larger SR pin. The big end width on the B16A is naturally wider, but i wont have any problems with this. I scored a set of 2nd hand rods for $100Aud - machining is basically free.

I will be using SR20VE pistons, and machinng a very fine amount off the top and nothcing for valve releif. The piston in stock form on the B16A rods will net me 11.53:1 CR, after machning the piston and decking the block/head i will be around 11.4:1 CR. It almost works out perfect!

Have you looked into honda h22 rods? Also said to be a close to perfect match for a sr stroker kit.

What size bore are you doing? And what sleeves? Also, pls me me the details of the crank shop if you don't mind.

H22 rod length was too long for what i needed.

The reason i chose the B16 rod is because i can run a stock pin height piston. The other option was use factory rods and get a custom piston made up - which ultimately is the easiest, but at $1600 a set including machining and calculations i could not justify it.

At first I was thinking WTF? but then I pulled up my spec sheet and found these numbers...

SR20 specs

C2C - 136.3mm
BEB - 51.00mm
BEW - 22.75mm
PEB - 22mm
PEW - 22.75mm

B16A -

C2C - 134.3mm
BEB - 48.00mm
BEW - 23.75mm
PEB - 21mm
PEW - 22.86mm

So basically you will have to yes narrow the rod slightly, bore out pin bushing which is easy. the harder part will be boring the BEB to 51.00mm from the 48mm. you will also have to shorten the rod C2C length by .020" as well. Then these rods will basically be a drop in for a stroker crank with factory pistons.

Interesting find. I am curious to see the outcome with the rods installed in the motor once you are done.

the H22 rod is C2C 143.15mm which is closer to the SR16 rod length of 144.95mm

The only issue, which has risen its head is the BEB size. I may be left with having to machine the crank surface down as well as playing with the B16 rod.. As the crank is already hardened i have no concern with the strength, but its a path we want to avoid. I will add some pictures above in 5 minutes time, you will see the problem ive come across. Its going to take some lateral thinking, feel free to shoot some ideas!
