Thread: oil filter questions

Hey guys,I have a few questions regarding the oil filter for my VE.I have notched the PS bracket so filter clearance is not an issue,and I am thinking of running a longer filter.

I have a 05 Frontier 4.0 in my truck,and a VE in my NX.
When I was ordering oil filters from GregV, he said the filters are the same,except one(truck) is longer
So I ordered 2 of each to see for myself.Indeed they are the same diameter and thread,but the Truck filter is longer(no surprise there....the truck uses 5.5 Qts vs. 3.5 qts for the VE)

I usually watch for the sale at Advance Auto to get my Mobil1 oil and the sale is usually 5 quarts and a M1 filter for the sale price(less than 30 bucks)

Well,the VE uses a m-108 and the truck uses a m-110....Same scenario,they are the same,but the m-110 is longer.

It seems like the longer filter would be slightly better to run on the VE since it is a little bigger,it seems it would filter slightly better.

HOWEVER,I did notice that the inside of the longer filter has a rubber piece inside that is obviously deeper in the filter than the shorter one is

Do you guys know what I am talking about?
Will there be any change in oil pressure or anything with the longer filter.I wouldn't think so ,but I had to ask.
It seems like you could use slightly more oil too.

I obviously wont run the smaller filter on my truck,but it would be nice to just buy the longer filters for both engines if possible

Longer (7317, 14610, M-110)
Shorter (M-108, 14612)

I usually use the longer filters.

Longer filters take longer to fill up during startup. Even the new Titan takes a puny filter for its 5.6L engine. Bigger isn't always better. If you change regularly then you won't need the larger filter anyway, especially on an engine in good shape.

I should add, that even though the larger filter will fit, some engines may have clearance problems with the power steering hose coming out the bottom of the pump. If it clears, then sure! A little more oil capacity can't hurt!

Ok,I thought the filter has a anti drainback in it so it stays full of oil between startups

True, the filters to have drainback valves to prevent oil leaking out of the filter. They are never 100% effective though. The M1 and K&N silicon units do very well. Cheaper brands don't.

Nismo FTW! More flow, more filtering, more life & they ain't big. There's a noticable difference in how long your oil stays golden & I wouldn't use anything else now.

Where do you get them from Clint? Just the dealer?

i heard that honda circuit racers actually use a smaller oil filter thank standard on their b18c motors
