Thread: Cat went bad but have hiflow and straight pipe which route shall i take?

My Hiflow cat is rattling. I have both a new hiflow cat and a straight pipe. I read an article that straight pipe loses power on the dyno. But i dont remember if it was a straight pipe or a gutted cat that was tested.

Thanks for the guidance. I think if anything maybe minimal gain at the top but overall power loss through out with the straight pipe.

from what car is that lip coming from?

I got same side skirts you have but without a lip the car look empty in the front.

power will be in this order

straight pipe
good high flow
gutted

straight pipe is the best for making power simple.

A good high flow cat can out perform a gutted cat because most good high flows (like metal cat) have a far wack of r&d in baffle and flow design. Where as a gutted is crap because it will open up in the middle of the cat and then the air is forced back into a 3 inch ( or 2.5) pipe at bad angles making the air fight to get back into the pipe.

Straight pipe will make most power always and forever.

High flow cat versus gutted cat is a crap shoot. If it's gutted well it will flow as well as a straight pipe. If it is gutted poorly it can flow worse than a high flow cat.
The thing in your hand in the pics looks like a very well gutted cat.

well it all comes down to what you consider a gutted cat. to me a gutted item is just attacking the baffles with a broom. However is you consider welding in a pipe through the midle a "well designed gutted" then yeah i agree with you

Yes a gutted cat is the worst out of the three. And yes, the straight pipe will make the most power.
