Thread: Minor issues with the ve

Well, I tried searching and couldn't really come up with a complete answer here so thanks for helping me out.

I was just checking up on my fluids this evening, and I noticed a strong smell of gasoline when I opened the valve covor cap.

I pulled the plugs to find the tops of pistons 1 and 3 looked wet after the car was sitting for 25minutes.

I also noted the spark plugs I had just replaced had more brown on the ceramic verses the 2 and 4 which looked brand new still.

I have been getting about 20mpg with my afrs looking pretty good on the wideband.

My first find is that I should pull off the fuel rail and prime the system. I will do this as soon as I have time. I guess my only question to that is, if the injector is leaking when I pull the rail, is this basically a failed injector? Or is there a little o-ring down there I can replace and hopefully fix the issue.

This makes me wonder how this has been affecting my gas mileage and performance, as I had been getting a wonky 10.2afr sometimes when I cam to idle with my o2 disabled and the cells tuned to 14.7-15 afr.

Here is a picture of my plugs if it helps at all, less then 600miles on them, you can tell left to right, the first and third are much darker.

It is mostlikely a bad o-ring.

Thanks Dre, I already ordered a complete set of o-rings.

I am not looking forward to replacing my mobile 1 with less then 600miles on it. The motor was already spotless under the cover, so it didn't even do me any good.

Ok I pulled the rail off,primed the system, and no leaks. I left the rail on shop towels for 5min and pressure was holding at 35-40psi.

I took off the dampener vac line and if I turned the rail so the dampener vac line is facing down and squeezed that rubber line coming off the dampener I could get a nice bubble of black goo stuff to come out. Not sure if that is residual junk that has found its way into the dampener or if the dampener is having some problems. Who knows.

I am going to pull off the #1 injector and check out the o-rings condition in a bit.

Well 1 and 3 are still wet. After checking my buddies b18 oil they smell similar. So I am not so sure about the fuel smell,although it is there, perhaps I am confusing it with blowby/used oil. At this point I don't know.

The injectors are fine. Cyl 1 and 3 are still damp inside after driving it a few times since I initially noticed this.

The car has been sitting for 24hrs, and I started it up and ran to the tailpipe to see absolutely no smoke of any color coming from the tail pipe.

I pulled my stock fpr and the fuel pressure jumped to 44. I pulled the dampener and revved the motor and the fuel jumps around. With the dampener line plugged in, it jumps around exactly the same. I was unable to get anymore media out of the dampener.

My PCV valve is brand new and working perfectly. I have the valve cover vent hooked up to the intake manifold and there is no oil or any residue in my intake pipe. The motor does not smoke unless I am revving past 7, and it is very light smoke as reported by those behind me.

Any suggestions at this point would be of huge help.

can you swap injector locations to see if the wet cylinders change? this would point out a bad injector. if that doesnt change then we have to look else where.

Wet with what? gas? Maybe those two cylinders are not firing and you have an ignition problem.

That's not a bad idea at all. But I had the fuel rail out for a considerable amount of time and found no leaks.





Well at first I assumed gasoline because I thought the oil smelled too strongly of gas. Now I am confused as to why those cylinders look wet even after having the car sit for a day. How could gas even get onto the pistons if the injectors are not leaking? If it was oil wouldn't it smoke when the car was started? I have checked the pistons three times now and every time those are wet, however the vehicle never smokes out of the tailpipe.

thats really really strange man, i would do as mr.sentra_specv said an swap the injectors around, would eliminate them as culprits.. when i was runnin my de ecu my car ran funky as hell, my friends behind me said it didnt really smoke but u could smell the gas like a mofo.. and ya if it was oil i'd assume it would smoke.. sometimes i think my oil smells gassy, but thats with like 2 diff se-rs an my gf's SE.. then i just go smell my datsuns oil (which truely is gassy) and my other cars oil smells nothing like that... i gotta change the oil on the datto pretty often, but shes old.. 30 year old stock engine still goin strong.. just needs some piston rings hehe :P.. anyway good luck man hope ya figure it out..

Thanks for your opinion. It was weird because I feel like a complete noob thinking the oil had too much gas smell, it is evident but not that bad compared to my buddies Honda.

Well it wouldn't be that hard to swap the 1 and 2 injectors and see.

Is it even possible for gas to stick to the piston and stay wet especially after the car has been driven?? That seems highly unlikely.

The other thought in my mind was that perhaps it is from the pcv valve, or that dampener on the ve rail. But those are between cyl 1 and 2, so how is it 1 and 3 are the wet ones....

Ill try and swap them over tomorrow then see what we get with that.
