Thread: water pump?

how do i check to see if i need a new water pump ? my car is overheating and has been for a while, i cant seem to find out what the issue is. thermostat is new nissan oem, and opens i can verify that i saw it open when i opened up the housing, my car just boils all of its water in to the overflow and it never gets back in to the engine and causes the car to run really hot..

The water pump is mechanical so once the pulley is turning more than likely it should be working, evident by the movement of coolant in the radiator - if you open and look.

Otherwise you can look for leaks around the waterpump area.

You can also check for noise especially at start up - damaged bearing.

worn out head gasket ? I just had the same problem. One day after a drive I turn off the engine and water just started to poor out from the overflow, I was in a hurry so I came back and checked the water level both in the overflow and radiator all was good and drove back home and seems like noting happened.

Then a couple of weeks later the temp started to rise higher than usual so I parked with engine on and checked water level both radiator and overflow, it was still ok but this time the temp was higher like 3/4 of the temp gauge and there seems to be 'air' in the water system from looking into the radiator causing small bubbles all the time and slowly pushing water out (radiator cap off). Rev the engine to see if the water was still moving or flowing and it was. Changed a new thermostat, problem still there. So had no choice but to open her up and found that the head gasket was starting to leak and crack. So in the process of changing it now. Hope that it works !

Sorry for the long post tried to shorten it best i could. Or another thing to look at is maybe a clogged up radiator or your radiator fans.

how the caps for the radiator.....did u check that also.....i say check
1. radiator cap
2. leaks ...make the car idle a good time with intermittent revs
3. thermostat....cook it
4. relook pump....
5. bleed system

do all these little things then if it still persists u might have to open her up

thermo stat opens, i found out that by opening the housing when it was still hot, the cap i've chaged 2 times and even tried the higher temp cap, there is no way to see if the water is flowing in my radiator because it has a dinky neck on it and all i can see is the the kink where it travels water back to the radiator, i would love to get rid of the stupid neck on this radiator im pretty sure theres all kinds of space in that neck for air to get trapped in, head gasket is pretty new probly has less than 15k miles its a metal ve-t gasket. i kinda just want to drive the car in to a lake.

some one tell me the proper way to bleed the system.

theres a plug at the thermostat...take it out and pour coolant in the radiator ontil u see a steady steam of coolant coming from it...withe the coolant still being poured....replug back the area at the thermostat and then u should be good....start the car and make idle with the cap off and see if it needs to be tapped up.....then close the radeiator and make sure the level in the rad bottle is proper.....

No matter how small the neck of your radiator is you should still see movement that will tell if your water pump is working.

when the pump fails, coolant comes out of the weep hole at the top of the pump behind the pulley.

True, so cant be pump.

I suspect a few things could possibly happen:

a. block in th cooloing system

b. head or block warp

c. head gasket

d. crack in the head.


A leak would not cause boiling
