OK I'll re-phrase:

Check the clearances for both high and low lobes, one valve at a time, and then work out which shim will provide the best clearance setting for both of them.

The reason for checking both of them, is so that you KNOW that you're not running high lobe clearances that are too tight or too loose.

As an aside, if you're using Nissan cams, chances are the high & low lobe clearances will be very similar. If you're using aftermarket cams they may well be different - the Franklin's certainly tend to be (in my experience) due to the different base circles of the high & low lobes - which has been discussed in this forum ad nauseam.

Please someone let me know if I have this right, if I check that my shims on the low lobes are within spec or just slightly higher, then the high lobes should be fine. Correct?

This is stock sr20ve cams used with gtir pistons.

I think my headgasket failed (ve metal with stock head bolts) and I want to check the clearances to make sure everything iis good.

theres no blowby or anything, car ran perfectly but lost compression in 3 cylinders while tuning. So rings seem fine, but just want to check valve clearance as a quick check showed that they were wayyy below whats posted in another thread here.

Yes, you're fine on the high lobes lash clearance.

Don't worry about the high lobe clearance. It was brought up because of the aftermarket camshafts. Nothing to worry about on your factory camshafts.
