Thread: Proper Fuel Pump

Well I would like to know what hp the Walbro fuel pumps support. If I am looking at a 200whp ve setup, would the 199, 255, or 255hp be suitable.

I am assuming any of the above will support that power, however if anyone has expereince with the different pump ranges (the lower output one's clearly), please let me know.

Walbro measure their pumps in LPH (litres per hour), not HP. 255lph is suitable for an SR putting out up to 400hp. The dealers over here claim they're suitable up to 500hp but I think that would be pushing the pump too hard & it would crap out pretty quickly.

I wasn't particularly impressed with the flow rate of the Walbro pumps under higher pressures so went for a Bosch 044 300LPH pump instead

Remember you can't really go overkill with a fuel pump.

More fasterer, were you looking at the flow rate of a 255 or 255hp (high perssure unit) when you were not impressed?

Dudeman, the 255 should handle 500 WHP N/A and the 255hp likewise for a turbo application.
Basic math gives me a figure of 390 WHP for the Walbro 199 for an N/A application.

Dislaimer: I only have direct experience with Walbro 255hp pumps (as with most of us on this forum).

Ben, that is exactly what I figured as far as how much the pumps could work with, but I couldn't find information about it on the forum really. I knew someone had an educated asnwer.

If I can get away with the 199, it is cheaper and probably quiter, not that that is a huge issue.

The 255... the 255hp isn't imported here as far as I'm aware.

So you have been on the stock fuel pump this whole time?

Yeah, is that a problem? My afr's have been pretty decent up top, I have never been lean at the top end really. Nothing I couldn't tune out.

Does the stock pump at %100 not support 200whp?

I was under the impression the stock pump is workable until it begins to crap out. I am planning to replace the pump asap as to avoid possible problems.

The stock pump barely holds 185-190 whp and I wouldn't consider it safe. Sometimes the pump could be at its maximum capacity and not keep fuel pressure where you want it.

I believe the stock fuel pump capacity was revisited recently. Common knowledge was that it wasn't good for much more than 175 WHP. We have a member here who is turbo charged and making about 200 WHP on a stock fuel pump and has been doing so for over 50k miles or something. He's brought into question the common knowledge. I think someone else (Andreas?) mentioned that there were (or must have been) two different fuel pumps installed in SE-Rs. I think that some early 1991 cars got hold-over 1.6L pumps or B12 pumps or something, and would give up very early. It was one of these pumps that was tested early on and why everyone thinks they aren't good for more than 175 WHP or so when in reality most SE-Rs have a much more capable fuel pump.
