Redline Heavy shockproof
I have been searching this, but want some more input from VE specific guys...what do you run for gear oil?I have always used MT-90 in my cars( none have been turbo)
However when I drained my tranny in the VE car, ithad HD shockproof in it(obviously by the pink pepto color) .
The tranny shifted fine, and honestly I can tell the difference from MT-90.
I am in FL so maybe it just doesnt get cold enough here to be a problem with thickening up.
I was planning on putting HD shockproof back in when I reinstall the tranny.Mainly because thats what was in it already.I have had an occasional grind going into 4th,but not very often. My questions are...

1-Is HD shockproof really neccassary for the power my VE is capable of putting down?
2-Will there be a problem if theres leftover shockproof in the tranny and I put in mt-90 instead?

Oh yeah I already have a couple quarts of mt-90,but need to order the shockproof if I go that route.

Thanks for the input

No shockproof is not necessary for that power, and it will be fine if there is some left in it. Some people mix match the mt90 and the shockproof for a happy medium between the two

mt90 is plenty for your VE. but i had the heavy shockproof in my old 400whp 4door before and it was awsome for that application...

Why would one want to think that Redline oil is not necessary because you are not running boost or big power? We all know the weaknesses of the SR20 tranny in particular the 3rd gear so let's not fool ourselves.

I have broken third gear and the car making just 175whp.

Since then I am using Genuine Honda Manual Transmission oil. BTW, I live in tropical climate - Jamaica.

Peace

bumping this up....still looking for more input and opinions.
Now I am leaning toward mt-90 again, because I was reading about HP losses with shockproof.
I would obviously like to squeeze everything I can out of the engine since it is NA.But not at the cost of a tranny. At best after all my mods I hope to be at 200whp(as do all of us ve owners, lol)
Supposedly 5 hp is lost with heavy shockproof?
Can anyone verify this?

I have seen personally cars lose 15whp using the heavy shockproof and changing to Royal purple. I will be dynoing the results myself sometime to see what I gain. I love the heavy SP, and it shifts just fine for me in the cold for the most part. If you are NA I would look into the light shockproof perhaps. Turbo, I don't trust anything but the heavy stuff, but I am willing to try some regular stuff with this p11 box to see if it can hold up.

I have broken my original B13 tranny twice. Both times with a dead stock DE.

No racing of any sort.

I drive just fine, don't rest my hand on the knob, don't drag the clutch, can heel and toe just fine, and don't do anything actually abusive to my vehicle, ever.

Currently, after rebuilding the tranny (stupid, and pre-forum for me) for the second time, I am running Redline Heavy Shockproof. Period.

Our B13 and B14 trannies suck. They should have been factory recalled. The B14 tranny has only a factory "band aid" fix on it, B14 trannies suffer pop-out, just not as often as B13's.

Nissan did NOT correctly, fully, address the issue until they completely redesigned the outer case of the transmission with the B15 series.

Further, when I buy a VE, it will be in conjunction with a B15/P11 transmission and the install will be done at the same time.

If I were you, I would be far more concerned with your tranny blowing up, than with a few horsepower. Therefore, I would run the most protective tranny fluid you can get. Redline Heavy Shockproof.
