Standalone Ignition for VE w/Carbs
I have been engaged in a discussion with some folks building up an SR20DE with carburetors for a Datsun 510. Someone suggested a MegaJolt Lite Jr ignition system so I looked into it.
The MegaJolt system drives a Ford EDIS ignition and uses the Ford crank position sensor/wheel, ignition module and coil pack. It requires a 36-1 wheel be attached to the crankshaft to trigger the ignition.
The MegaJolt Lite Jr is programmable on a 10x10 grid. It can be adjusted for load by input from a MAP sensor or TPS depending on which system is chosen. What I found interesting is it has a dedicated shift light output with 4 other programmable outputs that use either RPM or load.
I know some have set-up VE engines with carbs, I remember one that had a motorcycle slide carb set-up. To me the MegaJolt Lite Jr would be great with the programmable outputs because you can use them to trigger the cam solenoids. It also can be arranged to have a soft rev limiter as well.
I do have a question on connecting the VVL solenoids. The MegaJolt Lite Jr can handle up to 500 milliamps for current load thru the outputs. What is the current draw of the VVL solenoids? If it is higher than that limit, it would only require relays to lower the load to a workable level.
Has anyone ever looked into a standalone ignition for a carbed VE?
