Lightened Flywheel on a VE
Thinking about purchasing a 8.5lb flywheel for my motor. I've heard a few pros and cons on the matter. Cons being slower move off, higher gas mileage, poor idle. Can anyone share their experience wit a lightened flywheel and what were the gains and losses? Also heard it affects a/c.

gains: throttle response and revs better
cons: slightly easier to stall unless you use the right revs, also revs also drop faster on gearchanges

I agree with previous posts.

The only drawback is that you have to relearn your startup a little bit. This is minor -- you just have to add a few revs more than normal. The other things that you mention (slower launch, lower gas mileage, rough idle) are not something that I've experienced (VE with 8.5# flywheel).

Although a heavy flywheel may make a difference for a drag launch in a DE, with my VE, I'm spinning wheels all the way through first with a feathered clutch take off so I don't see any advantage to having more flywheel momemtum for a VE.

On a road course, the light flywheel makes matching revs for downshifting smoother -- covering less precise throttle work with a smooth downshift.

Overall, there is no significant downside, IMHO. I'd do it again. There are lots of mods I don't say that about.

I'v driven almost 500 miles with my flywheel. The only bad thing is the stalling. But you'll get the hang of it. The AC thing is BS! I heard the same thing. The car runs the same with the AC on. If anything the revs drop a tad slower. Other then that response is great and revs like a bike

you can usually take a stock flywheel down to the weight of an sr16 flywheel or a little less. 14-16lbs usually.

Yea but there is a chance that it's not balanced. i have seen some that looked fine but still were not balanced correctly. You're better off buying a newer one, or a used and replace the friction plate on it.
