The MSS can be set to display whatever you want on the main screen, depending on how the MSS is hooked up, but yes, RPMs should be the default parameter reading on the home screen.

First thing you need to do is make sure you are getting an accurate RPM readout. If you're idling 800RPM, the MSS should read "80." You'll have to trace back the wires. Make sure the blue wire's not being used, that's only for really advanced users. The brown wire needs to go to a wire that reads an RPM signal. The best wire is the Blue/orange wire that is coming out of the Gauge cluster. As shown in the diagram above, there's a wire that runs straight from the ECU to the tachometer in the gauge cluster.

I don't know what ECU pin-out it is, so you're on your own. I suggest you re-tap the wire yourself, and tap it from behind the gauge cluster. I think it's the center clip. Look at the circuit board on the back of the cluster, it's the wire that reads TAM, should still be blue/orange.

its a 97 200sx se with a ve conversion. i tapped into blue orange wire on the ecu but nothing. doesnt seem like we are getting a rpm signal . 0 rpm is being displayed

Well, either way, you're not getting a signal off that wire. If you used a wire tap, maybe you didn't completely get through the insulation.

Naw I stripped the wire and got it directly to thr wire ... This is the least of my friends worries right now he dropped a throttle body butterfly screw last night ... The msd will have to wait ... Honestly I don't think the ecu Is putting out a rpm signal

The MSS is discontinued. What ever is out there now is all that's left.

quick ques..i have a sr20ve with an 5fwd lsd manual transmission and i am using the automatic ECU together with the greddy mss do i need to do anything to the ecu for fuel when the cams are activated?

Nope. Jus switch the cams. The increase in airflow will make the MAF request more fuel.

You still might want to get a dyno w/ wideband, then you'll know for sure if you're at a good A/F.

Push the rotary button to change the values, push the "select" button to go between parameters (RPM, voltage, temp, boost, etc). Push "MODE" again to go to solenoid 2 setup.

The base settings should read as follows (hold "MODE" to access):

Top=little dash on top
Bottom=little dash on bottom

Pr - Top
C4 - Top
P2 - Top

When the 1 is shown, it says "ON"
When the 2 is shown, it says "ON"

In the actual parameter setup, I have (stock SR20VE cams):

1 (exhaust):

On 4800
Off 4790
Everything else is ZERO unless you set it for TPS or temp (only engages when warm).

2 (intake):

On 4600
Off 4590
Everything else is ZERO unless you set it for TPS or temp (only engages when warm).

Here's a pic of how to hook it up:

Power source: Most people are confused as to what you should do with the red and orange wires. IMO, tie the red and orange together, tap it to an ACC source (cig lighter) and call it a day. It turns on and off just fine for me. Anything else is just more than it's worth.

I tapped my RPM signal to the back of the instrument cluster rather than to the ECU, I think this is MUCH easier than pulling out the ECU. This would be a blue/orange wire (center harness on the b14 and late B13....excluding the cars that don't come with a stock tach).

Don't tap the speed or any other parameters if you don't have to. RPM is the only signal you really need (unless you absolutely only want to activate the cams under certain throttle position). As soon as I unplugged my speed signal, my problems went away.

Another thing I noticed. Since the MSS provides the ground signal for activation, I'm sure most of you have tapped the other end of the solenoids to a constant positive battery source. It will work, however, I found out that when the car is off, the Greddy draws power THROUGH THE SOLENOIDS. This is not enough current to actually activate the cams, but it has caused my MSS to stay on full time, as well as my radar detector. Here's the solution. Do not tap the cam(+) signal directly to the battery, instead, tap it to a source that is connected to the ignition. If need be, use the same source as the red/orange MSS wires are tapped to and run a 3rd wire through the firewall. I'm still looking for a good source in the engine bay to tap to.

Installing on a 1991 SE-R. I've got the cluster out but am having trouble finding a orange/blue wire on the center harness. I've got black/red, red/black, black, black, yellow/green, and blue/black. Any ideas which I should tap into?
