Thread: Anyone else with AEM EMS, I have a question

I was told this is an AEM thing. Does your car take a few extra seconds to start up? I have to hold the starter for a good 3-4 seconds before it turns over, every time.

yes mine is like that, you esp notice it i think if you have your spark plugs gapped larger. i went from .28 to .30 and definitly noticed a starting difference. i dont get any kinda miss or anything with .30 but the starting difference is kinda annoying. i noticed it right away when i went from a smaller gap to a larger gap

I keep mine at stock gap, but yea. No misfire, just crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, crank, start.

haha yep thats the aem ems for ya. sometimes i get my hopes up that it will start in like 2 cranks, then 2 cranks later, then 2 cranks later lol i dont know what thats about

no problem here I set the early snyc and it fires right up. for now wait tell it is E98 in the tank

You have to adjust the crank injector time table. My guess is you are to lean at cold start. Also, you should look at the ignition tables. If you have cold temps, you really need to modify the ignition vs coolant temp and the warm up enrichment tables AFTER you have correctly set the idle target base table and the idle% vs target base table. My car was the same way, now I get th engine to fire and stay running inside of 3 cranks.

Also, I had to extend my RPM Offset vs. Start table because the stock map wouldn't hold the RPM long enough after the initial crank to allow the fuel map to take over. If you make the first three Cells in the table 400RPM it helps a lot. If it stumbles from over richness, just back down the third cell to 375RPM.

Coach.. have you tried to check the early sync before you changed the tables my problem was that it always took a bit before the sensor synced and just checking that made it sync faster

if you had to estimate how many cranks is normal verses how many cranks it takes with the aem ems>? i have heard of others who have their aem ems start a few seconds later than stock

If the car isn't starting like stock, there's something wrong with the cranking/start/afterstart settings. There is no reason any decent stand-alone shouldn't start like stock. It's all in the settings. Listen to coach as he knows his AEM stuff. My friend's SR20DET starts quickly every time (warm or cold) using AEM EMS.
