The coil had actually crossed my mind. What about the igniter plug? As far as I can tell I am using the stock 205k igniter. I had changed the coil for one I found that looked cleaner on the outside. But I don't know how many miles are on it....

Is it possible to check the coil with a multimeter? Or the igniter?

I had read that coils can overheat, and that would explain the higher rpm after a few hour problems...

Thanks for spending the time to give me some suggestions, I hope I can get to the bottom of this.

Usually the igniter just fails and does not work. Checking the coil with a meter will show good when cold. Until it gets HOT it cuts out.

Problems like that can be a real pain. I hope you figure it out.

Dudeman,

If I had any guess to what your problem would be, I would guess coil too, because try this to eliminate some of those other things. Get the car up around the 80 avg mark as you stated above when it gave you the problem, but this time do it in 4th gear. Obviouslly the RPM's are going to be way higher than 5th but just to test the Coil. This will end your questioning about your 5th gear tune. And at the same time be able to test to see if it would be the coil (heating) up also. Your issue is 100% electrical.

Check the master fuse under the bonnet. I had MAJOR problems for weeks, and it was this little sucker causing most of them...

It looked ok, tested ok, supplied power ok, but when running it moved away enough to give a intermittent power supply. Wasnt until i was wiggling it with a test light on the circuit and noticed a flicker. Still looked ok, but once i remove the plastic cover and touched it with a small screwdriver and realised it was broken, not blown.

I guess i can figure this to be due to a 15 year old car, been used for all sorts of motor sports, and now Prothane mounts making things like this more prone to the vibrations.

Have a good visual check, its easy to see if its your prob, and kinda fits your description of the faults ok.
