I do believe you're right there. I think that advice is for those starting a tune from scratch and is just general good advice.

You say it advances 2 degrees right away and kind of stays there? It makes me wonder if that's slack in the chain getting taken up right away and then not changing afterward. Or some odd electrical issue that doesn't show up until the TPS moves or the alternator starts charging more...

It really is a weird issue.

If you can't solve it, I'd at least get it as stable as possible from 1k RPM to 7k RPM or whatever... So it's like a constant 2 degrees too much. Then just set the timing 2 degrees retarded on the pulley and call it a day?

Something could be burnt out in the box....

In the old aem software u needed to set the ignition values flat to set timing but By the last update for the v1 software they
fixed it so u don't have to when u hit fixed timing.
