Wideband is the first step you need to take IMO. I can have it hooked up and reading your AFR's in an hour as well.

I had my old LC1 installed on mine the day I got it home.

Don't give up because of this. It is just learning the correct way, nothing wrong with that. May be some sort of

During the past year of me being 23, I have learned more about my car than I have the whole time from ages 17-22. I never have had a wideband on my car in all those years but I was able to richen and lean my mixture by the SAFC II. If I had a wideband, I would never need to use a dyno facility. I could just drive around and make adjustments.

Check the spark plugs if you think you are rich or lean. That is a tried and true method. If you take pictures of them as clearly and close up as you can, we can help you read them. Put them against a white piece of paper or some white background so nothing can skew what we see. Try using the sunlight or natural light in the picture rather than a flash bulb. Take out all the variables and make the picture as close as we can see it in real life. We all already have different monitors ALONG with different eyes so we all see colors a tad different, even if we were at the same location at the same time. Take away human elements to make the pic look best it can and I know I could offer you my opinion on what it is or how bad it is.

Check the exhaust tip. The inside of it would be thick with a very black and rich smelling carbon build-up. The darker is usually the more rich the burn coming out of your car. Mine is running a little bit rich but I do not know how much. I have not purchased a wideband myself. However, if I would redo my car all over again.

Electronics would be first (wideband and engine management), than suspension, than go-fast parts. That is just my personal preference for modding a vehicle based on my current daily driver.

Sorry for that rant, it felt good though.

Nobody ever listens to me anyway, but here goes .
This is from my personal exprience, not what I "heard" or "read somewhere".

Yes, JWT ECU are said to be a little rich for obvious reasons. But they don't sell them so rich that you smell gas. That rediculous...no way they have sold so many ECUs for 500 bucks each all these years if that was the case.

-First thing you should do is get the numbers from inside the ECU and call JWT and see if you have the tune you think you have.
-If it is indeed a POP program tuned for S3 cams, you should not be so rich that you smell fumes.I think you have a different problem if thats the case.
The reason I say this is because I have run a JWT ECU with the same tune on a DE with stock cams, CAI,header and catback. Before It was installed,I called and talked to a tech at JWT to see what their opinion was on running this ECU on the car until the cams are installed(if ever, lol) .I was told that it will not be too rich and the difference from a standard POP NA program for stock cams and the program for cams is more timing adjustments than fuel adjustments. dont have a wideband, but I have driven 4 tanks of gas so far,and there is definately a difference from stock. No difference in gas mileage,in fact I gained about 1 mpg since the install.NO fumes,NO black smoke or black stains on the back of the car.
-Check fuel tank vent lines,and/or the oring around the fuelpump under the back seat. They will cause the fume smell just as easily.

Oh...if you do give up on this...hope you dont....then I will take those S3 cams off our hands

if I do give up on this, I won't pull the S3 cams out, i'll sell the car with them in there..

but i'll probably suck it up and now that my 5 mile run of modifications has turned into a marathon.. i will just suck it up and deal with it..

i may replace my o2 sensor and I will check my plugs and take pics ....

Viprdude, I wouldn't mind learning all of this about my car if it was necessary, but I'm spending more a month on this car for mods than I used to pay in monthly payments and insurance for my E36 M3 that I bought for $20k in 2005.

So I'm sorta thinking about just getting a fun/fast car and living with it the way it is from the factory.. this modification shit is starting to get old.. hmm.. the more I think abouti t.. the more I wanna sell the car.. fuck i dunno

Well I got my car running mint before I sold it, can't sell it in good faith if you don't know what it can really do, you know?

I ended up getting a Yukon XL Denali. Power windows and locks, I'm lovin' it lol

yeah i would just sell it to the person with knowledge that it's not tuned correctly.. I think i need to have a 4 day weekend of non-stop working on my car to get it running right.. before I do too much more with modifying it.
