Thread: COP (coil on plug) pencil coils that will fit a FWD engine.

Coil on plug (COP) from the RWD SR20s will not fit on the FWD engines. They are too short, and much too wide or "fat". We need slim "pencil" coils to fit our engines properly. The height of the coil is obviously most important. The type of seal it provides against contaminants is also important. The mounting provisions are also of concern. The type of spark plug tip the coil requires is also important. I'm going to try to cover all known coils and describe how well each one of them fits and works in the FWD engines.

Height fitment:
About 10mm too short. You will have to notch your valve cover.

Sealing quality:
Uses these seals. You will have to cut them short. The seal is adequate but could be better.

Mounting provision:

Quite a bit taller than required.

Sealing quality:
Uses these seals. You will not have to cut them short. The seal can be pushed down the shaft to provide a good seal but it could be better.

You could ask Mazworxs since thats what they use on the S15 for the VE head.

I will ask Mazworxs that. More updates after lunch.
Edit: I'm almost positive I remember them saying they use the AEM brand pencil coils and I'd predict they are using the short ones but I'll try finding out for sure. Pretty sure Daxx used the "short" (not extra short) Denso coils from the earlier CBR600.

The Honda K20 and F20C coils sure do look similar. They might be the same.

If you're looking for the perfect fit in a 2-wire coil I'd try out the Denso coils found on the Suzuki motorcycles. They look like they'd be perfect. If you're looking for a 3-wire solution, the Honda K20 and F20C coils look like a great choice.

I would love it if anyone has the opportunity to try any of the coils listed in the first post and report back as to how they fit and what type of plug tip they need.
Dan Martin owns an S2k so if we get frisky enough we might try them out some day when we get the chance.

Look up the toyota 1zz coil, I know the miata guys use them.. I actually have 4 at the garage now. I could check visual fitment/sealing... its a 4wire plug. Wiring it easily order at your local dealer...

You like how Denso seems to make every single one of these things? =D
Bosch probably makes the BMW ones...

Keep in mind the motorcycle coils are designed to be driven by a CDI system and therefore might not have a very high turns ratio.
