ecu tuning basics
i have been considering purchasing the calum real time ecu to play around with.
But before I get in over my head, can anyone recommend some books or websites to explain the basics on engine management and ecu tuning.

I found megasquirts website to be pretty informative so far

Thats a great idea.

I myself have been struggling with the same thing. I got the realtime ecu, thinking it would be super easy, but I am finding myself not able to quench my thirst for knowledge about tuning these things.

The neat thing is with the realtime you can also get experience tuning using basic ecu code, that is not only pretty universal for the most part, but allows you to understand how your ecu works.

That said, the realtime is a GREAT thing to have. Even if you cannot tune worth crap, it allows you to instantly load any program onto it if someone already has a tune available for your setup. Also, with free programs, you can hook your computer up and monitor live information about the ecu. Really handy!

A link you might not have found yet: (props to hypro123)

There is some other information over on sr20forum. One thing that was suggested was to read the entire ecu database over there, its allot to read but I have started to do that because the information is scattered and its bits and pieces.

There are some links to other write-up's on Nissan Ecu's that are also really helpful, so if you can find those ( I tried for a good 30min and cannot find em, sorry) it will get you off to a much better start then I have had.

Gl, tell me if you find anything awesome.

A sticky for Tuning could be done but it's going to be a lot of stickies because every tuning Device EX: SAFC. AEM. ect.. tunes differently and have a lot of different setting to tune the car right.

If people are willing to do it then it would be great.
If we can get at least 3 different tune write ups we can create a Subsection under this section for that Target device.

We could at least make one for Calum ECU's. I wish he had his own section on here....

Well, He is suppose to have a Video hitting the forums in a bit to show how to use this Real time ECU. Calum will be out of the loop until January.

I didn't read that entire site, but the Calum basic only holds "one map". The confusion is that there are 2 chips on the basic, but both chips hold the same program.

If you wanted diff't maps for the basic, then you can have the maps on other chips and swap the chips when you want to change - a PITA, but not a big deal if you know you are going to the track or filling up with 100 octane, etc.

If you want to swap programs almost instantly then the Calum basic isn't what you need.
