Thread: Flashlights! (Torches!)

A long time ago my home inspector clued me into how good flashlights had gotten with quality LED technology.
I took a deep dive into the world of quality LED flashlights looking for a single AAA and single AA solution. (I got tired of my Harbor Freight freebie.)
I ended up with these:

$19.95 single AAA solution: Thrunite Ti3
$49.95 single AA solution (can use dual AA with extension tube): Olight S15 Baton

The AAA unit is nice, and the AA unit is easily one of the best flashlights out there. I've actually been looking for a second one, and they don't make it anymore. I had to settle for a different Olight that is nice, but doesn't have the extension tube option.

Anyone else have flashlights they recommend?

Yes. Surefire. Streamlight. I sell them. They work very well. I have owned three SureFires and two Streamlights. They utilize a 123 battery.

One thing I've noticed is that it is tough to avoid the tacticool look. That shit turns me right off...

Yikes. At $35-$50 is it really that much better than say an $8-$10 light? And how would one quantify that?

I would say it’s worth it depending on what you’re looking for and how often you use a light. Many lights offer water proof protection and a limited lifetime warranty. It’s worth it in the long run if you’re the type that beats on flashlights.

Ben, I’m not much of a flashlight junkie but I’ve been looking into an EDC option and I’m realizing how good flashlights really are these days.

My one requirement is to have a light that fits in a leatherman sheath holder, which is pretty small. One light I’ve looked at is the Streamlight MicroStream USB. It is a rechargeable that recharges via a simple usb cable, gets 250 lumens, and has pretty good duration. One downside is it doesn’t take anything but Streamlight’s proprietary battery (roughly the size of AAA)

Another option that just recently came out is the Lumintop Tool AA 2.0. This light, when hooked up to a 14500 Li-ion battery pumps 650 lumens at a decent duration! It can also handle alkaline and NiMh batteries. It’s a tail clicky but has the option to switch out for a magnetic tail cap. And it offers a diffuser. Now it scared me at first because it’s a Chinese company but it offers excellent warranty with certified standards and amazing reviews. Plus, it’s probably the most compact AA light on the market. All for $20. But, not totally sure it’ll fit in the sheath.

The $50 one is worth it to me, absolutely. It has 5 levels of brightness, 3 of which are going to brighter than a $10 unit. It is going to last longer on the same charge (with options for MUCH LONGER battery life on the lower settings). The magnet in the base is worth the price of entry alone (working on cars has never been easier, can stick it to the hood, engine bay walls, etc.). It can expand with an extension tube for even more battery life. It's fully waterproof. Can wash it with brake cleaner if you need to.

Other things you might not care about are well-formed threads that don't hurt your soul to tighten. A strobe mode.

Obviously everyone's budget is different. But I didn't hesitate to get a second one.

Decent threads is a great feature. I know exactly what you mean about tightening the HF freebies, they feel as though they're going to cross-thread with every turn.

Sounds right. Just make sure it’s the V2 (most updated). Good flashlight for sure.
