How to Bypass Power Steering High Pressure Lines
My power steering hose started leaking, before I knew better I ran the american power steering fluid instead of Nissan Spec of ATF. At first I lost the HP hose, then HP pump, finally after the steering rack started leaking this guy finally realized that fluid is at fault.
That coupled with notoriously leaky high pressure hose, it was time to switch to something stronger. If yours ripped or if you would like to bypass the stock lines to have a more direct connection to the steering rack this mod is for you.
I picked up a 240sx SS Line that goes directly into the steering rack.
This SS line replaces the stock rubber line that goes to the strut tower and replaces the hard lines.
Remove the stock hard line directly from the steering rack
This bolt goes onto the pump, make sure the washer is there.
This is the P11 PS pump, older PS pumps/JDM ones are slightly different.
Bolt up the line and run it towards the steering rack.
For the steering rack the fitting should look like this, it's a -6an to 14mm. Make sure there is a washer on it. Mine didn't have one, and I couldn't figure out why it kept on leaking from the steering rack.
Finally install the stainless steel line, the 240sx line fits perfectly on the P11.
Attention JDM PS Pumps/Older Pumps
My JDM pump looks like this, notice the different angle for the line.
On JDM pump, the 90* elbow should fit perfectly fine, run the other line to the steering rack.
Here is where I tried to bend out the 90* elbow to be straightish. The line was about 1/4" too short though. Luckily a local hydraulic shop had some -6an 45* angles.
Now it fits perfectly and the line is actually a little bit too long with this adapter.
Since I've been removing the steering rack parts so much, my copper washer started leaking. At the time I only had an aluminum one, thus I tried that. It leaked too (you can see why too). Next day I went to Autozone and got another 14mm washer set, copper washer this time still kept on leaking. Finally I decided to use the steal/rubber washer that was in that set. That luckily fixed all of the leaks.
Close up of it installed
Now you can remove the connection by the strut tower and remove the extra hard lines.
(I had to cut mine, no way to get it out without messing with brake lines)
Now something to keep in mind, you wont be able to hook up the idle raising sensor. If you turn the wheel too much at idle, your idle will down to about 500rpm for a second or so, nothing serious though.
