Here is a play by play for doing Koni inserts. The article is for a B14 however it has great info. for ANYONE working on a custom Koni setup.

I have a question/observation about the 55mm length koni recommends you cut off for a Sentra.

when they recommend 55mm, I thought they were recommending that for a B15 application, because that's what they sell part number 8610-1409 for.. They don't intend for the 8610-1409 to be used in a B13 or B14 wouldn't you have to take your own measurements? I have 75 mm cut off of one of my strut housings (I have several extra's I'm sort of experimenting here) and 45mm off of another. The 75mm cut housing looks like my yellow koni will fit right in up to the second set of nubs with the bolt hole sticking out the bottom..

i'd like to hear your thoughts..

I am pretty sure I've seen your write up before and it was very useful in doing my write up, but its been a few months since I read it.. I have read probably every one of these build threads!!

Great write up. I am going to try this for a b13 with Hypercoil springs. Would I follow the same technique using the b15 inserts? I assume it is not imperative that exactly the right amount is cut off of the housing, since like Wes said, the insert does not sit on that edge anyway?

It is somewhat important to get right... But in reality as long as it bottoms and the top nubs engage that is all that really matters....

Thanks for the reply. I'm a little confused on the nubs and how exactly the insert is centered in the housing. I assume this will be slightly simpler with the Hypercos than the GCs. It will probably make more sense when they are in front of me.

The nibs simply have to enter the strut housing. The threaded nub on the bottom of the Koni insert protrudes through the hole you drill in the strut housing. The inserts will self center as they fit inside the OEM housing so tightly.

The nubs MUST be inserted in the housing when it's all said and done. Those nubs lodge the insert in the housing and prevents any side movement. If you cut too much off the housing, the nubs will still be outside the housing when the insert has bottomed out. This is a no-no. I made this mistake on my maxima when doing this and didn't realize til it was on the car and I heard the inserts making noise. Careful inspection revealed I had taken too much off the housing..now I have to redo them. Other than that mistake I made, it was pretty much a straight forward job. Good Luck.
