Got rod knock? What oil were you using?
Simple thread, but I am hoping to see a trend here with rod knock/bearing failure and the oil/weight used. Let's keep this simple. State the oil you were using and the weight when the failure happened.

I knew that walmart suptech synthetic was better than or just as good as mobil 1 synthetic.

Not necessarily. Could be that everyone just runs Mobil 1 and the oil works fine, but the engine is prone to spun bearings......

Most people on this forum agree on the oil to use, and most use Mobil 1, so you probably won't get anything from this poll outside of just seeing what everyone runs.

Really? Well some people must not have been informed that mobil 1 was reforumulated. It ain't what she used to be. She is now consisted of a group 3 hydrocracked oil, and hardly even counts as a full synthetic anymore.

But what I am trying to find out is if there is a link between the oil used and bearing failure. I used to use mobil oil myself, until my last teardown when I noticed 100K worth of wear in only 7K miles.

But also I want to see if maybe there is a trend with the new SM rated oils. 2004 was the switch and many engine failures have been noticed in the domestics, and it seemed that the imports were mostly unaffected. Perhaps these new emissions restrictions on oil are costing us long term durability?

Also, it is no surprise that Mobil 1 5w30 barely passes the industry IVA wear test. Supertech synth from wal mart outperforms mobil 1!

I used Mobil 1 10w30 up until I parked the car, and started tearing it down. I don't think I'll go back to a 10w30. It broke down WAY to easily under higher temps and speeds. Of course there was the smell of fuel in the oil too, which contributed to the breakdown.

I might just switch to Castrol.
