...and we have a WINNER! I saw him slowly closing up since the middle of the back side of the course. By the time we hit the last turn, I tuck inside as much as possible, give up the faster line and chill.
When you have someone you see from earlier session's experience you know will run faster elsewhere on the course, you want to get OFF the fast line, drop off 20 mph and wave them through
as quickly as possible. It's important to give up the speed, make the pass
as safe as possible for the
other guy, we're not racing. He carried easily +5-10 mph into the last turn, I lift off and let him through as quick as I can.
The alternative is I keep my foot in it, we drag race to the first turn with very similar power, and **** each other up. Now how fun would that be?
I've done a lot of passing lap track days, and nothing ****s things up faster than someone who has similar power who won't get the hell out of your way on the only section you are allowed to pass. I was out with ~20 350Z's for the ZCCA convention and a guy just wouldn't let me by, then he rode his brakes all around NHIS. When he got to the straight, he just held it down up to about 125, the last time he did so, he went to brake for turn one, the last I saw of him was him going off course onto the NASCAR oval, in a cloud of white brake smoke - he totally lost his brakes
Probably why I have such a ****-eating grin here
Thus the "SuperblackZ"
Now here's a guy you really don't want to see come up behind you, he took out a CP 260/280Z and was running in the advanced group, I look back and see his helmet, a pair of crossed checker flags, and...
Steve Millen on the helmet. 3-time IMSA Camel GT Champ, gawd knows what else, I rolled the rest of the turns as clean and fast as possible and he just sat there one car length back, like a cat with a mouse. NHIS road course is tight and short on passing areas, maybe 3 good places to pass safely. Damn that was a fun car right off the shelf.
Nice guy though. I've rarely been
so happy to let someone by, all I could think is I f'up now I take down two cars, one that costs a lot more than mine, and a famous driver to boot!
I replaced it with this, been pretty happy with it:
COBB AP, JWT clutch/FW, hotchkis sways, AAM plenum spacer, F/R STB's, JWT intake, a bunch of other small stuff, puts down an honest 265 NA whp which may not sound like a lot, but it works
DAMN I want another track day NOW
