HANS is great to have, but works only with dual should belt style harnesses (4-point, 5-point, 6-point) and is an expense a lot of people just choose to avoid. They are not mandatory in club style racing. It is a great device that prevents your neck from snapping forward violently in a hard front-on collision. It requires the helmet to be HANS compatible. It tends to limit your head's range of motion a good bit. If you have a high butterfly backed seat that tends to matter less as the visibility isn't there anyway.
Basically people don't run them often at the club level because of the cost, and likely-hood of that type of crash at those speeds is la bit less.

For 2012 SCCA requires a "HANS type" device. (I think that they actually just called out SFI specification 38.1)

It was my understanding that NASA had required the HANS as of 2010 or 2011.

For racing, but not for HPDE's. If they were required for HPDE's, they would have to require at least a 4 point harness also, which would also mean requiring a cage or roll bar at minimum, which they don't.

HANS is a great safety device, but the expense of using one goes beyond just the device itself. When you factor in the roll bar/cage and harness, cost goes way up. Not to mention most people do HPDE's with street cars, and having a cage in a street car doesn't exactly make it practical.

Guess I was confusing the discussion wheel to wheel vs track day. Sorry

I agree, and will go a bit further than non-practical. A cage or roll-bar in a street car, where/when you are not wearing a helmet, is incredibly dangerous and stupid. I just laugh at folks that do that, thinking they are safer with their exposed skull right next to roll cage tubing.

Here's what will be protecting my noggin.

Sorry for the blur on this one. G-Force Pro-Eliminator, size large, $249.99 at Smiley's just north of Houston, TX.

Hans compatible, Snell 2010, yada, yada, blah, blah, blah.

Yup, that's the same one I have but mine is a SA2005. I bought mine at a Summit store. I think I paid the same about 6 or 7 years ago. A couple more years and I'll be shopping for a SA2015 helmet

GForce is a great budget helmet IMO.

Bumping this thread because my helmet is SA2005.
Just want to make sure this will be legal for AMP.
Also,I need to buy another spare cheapo for my brother to ride shotgun with me on track.
SA2005 should be good till 2015 right?
Thanks

Does anyone know if you can use motorcycle helmets at AMP? Mine is rated Snell M2005. Thanks

FYI - I heard from Joe. Motorcycle helmets (Snell M rated) are okay at AMP.

Good to know, as Katie's helmet last year was a Motorcycle helmet, and probably will be again this year.
