I understand, I was just thinking that if they did not check helmets that I would rather see someone in this bucket than some crappy non dost motorcycle helmet...

I use this for ride alongs etc...

Have you ever seen an old helmet take a hit? Doesn't work very well.

I'm with you on the helmets but wrist guards are the piece of ppe most often overlooked by parents. They are also the most likely spot of injury for skaters and prevent a very expensive injury.

Your point it taken though. People used to say to me "oh you don't need a helmet your VE is only gonna run mid 14s" Yeah call me crazy I use a good helmet even in a slow car.

Great discussion. I'm probably going to get a full-faced helmet based on this (white at that, since I plan on getting a Miata and don't want the extra heat!), but does anybody know why rally drivers almost exclusively use open-face? Seems like they would most need that extra protection everybody refers to and that the ability to interact with their co-driver would be solved a safer way if open-faced is that much more hazardous.

Also, what are thoughts on HANs devices? I was first tuned into this device when Mike K. brought it up. If you're going to be in an accident that makes the helmet necessary, wouldn't the HANs also be vital?

I think Rally drivers are allowed to race with the windows up, so the full face doesn't give a huge advantage?

HANS is great to have, but works only with dual shoulder belt style harnesses (4-point, 5-point, 6-point) and is an expense a lot of people just choose to avoid. They are not mandatory in club style racing. It is a great device that prevents your neck from snapping forward violently in a hard front-on collision. It requires the helmet to be HANS compatible. It tends to limit your head's range of motion a good bit. If you have a high butterfly backed seat that tends to matter less as the visibility isn't there anyway.
Basically people don't run them often at the club level because of the cost, and likely-hood of that type of crash at those speeds is a bit less.

So motorcycle helmets are a no no then? My brother has a full face and a non face one, and I don't think I'll be able to get any other one by the convention.

Motorcycle helmuts are definitely a no-no.

If you are getting a helmet and are serious about tracking and maybe eventually racing, select an SA rated helmet with provisions for HANS device. Even basic G-Force helmets are available with this provision. I prefer not to have to drill and add this later.
