Thread: I have a question for the Texas folk

So, looking into moving to TX within a year or so (maybe a few months). One of my good friends and my brother live there and love it; and I'm getting tired of the north west, ha ha. Anyways, I've been looking into the emissions laws, but the state website on the matter is kind of vague, so I was wondering if some locals can chime in. My first choice is to move to the San Antonio or Austin area with Dallas being a backup (depends on work availability). I have OBD-II cars that don't have OBD-II motors, ha ha. No emissions at all where I live now, so I never had to worry about it. But I really would rather not have to worry about selling any of them. Do the emissions testers need to plug into the ports, is it just a sniffer test, are there visual engine bay checks? Hoping it's not too bad! Any feedback from people in those areas would be greatly appreciated!

I'd be REALLY surprised if populated counties w/ sicties like Dallas and San Antonio don't have emissions. It was the same in Pennsylvania. Started in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.. then spread like a virus thru the rest of the state.

Also, last I checked (like Florida), Texas as a whole is a little more lax about emissions than say Emissions Natsziei (yes, spelt wrong for a reason) Maryland or DC

Here in Oregon, the Portland Metro and Medford areas are the only emissions zones. Everywhere else is emissions free. From one response I got on another forum, it seems like the metro areas do perform emissions with plugging into the OBDII port, which sucks for me. The P10 I can probably get away with it, because I'll wire in resistors in place of the egr equipment for the OBDII JWT ecu I have. Of course, that only works if there isn't a visual check as well. My S14 I'm screwed (I run AEM EMS currently). I need to see if they have special use plates that get you passed emissions like you can here in Oregon. Either that or the loophole of smogging with one car, swapping plates, then smogging that same care again.

I had to get a CLASSIC CAR license plate here in PA for my B13 w/ VVL because of losing emissions stuff. It's all a scam. Sure, check for good brakes, tires, but if someone's 02 sensor is malfunctioning OH NO you don't pass.

I hear you there. IMO, it should ONLY be a tail pipe test and maybe a brake, tire & seatbelt inspection as well. As long as the car is safe and burns clean, then who cares what's under the hood.

For OBDII its all plug in, here in DFW(really, all metro areas); no sniffer, or visual inspection.

Buying your inspection is NOT difficult.

Hmm, so you're saying I could "gift" someone $80 and get the S14 passed for the next few years until it turns 25? Looks like I'm good to go in the P10, which is nice, because that's the DD, lol. Thanks for the info man.

Yes sir a yearly gift for the S14(80-150 depends on the metro area).

Regular inspection for the p10 is like $45 anyways.
