The neighborhood is also expensive to live in. Everyone else around us is in bigger houses worth anywhere from $250k - $400k. Honestly Columbia is stupid cheap compared to anywhere I would actually like to live.

You want to see some of the shit holes in CT that cost 250-400k! I want to move south

My house is nice I think and wasn't too much but I had to move far from my job and in the outskirts of a city with not so good rep. If you buy in a town outside of NYC forgettaboutit!

Your house seems really nice as does the neighborhood. Congrats seriously! I love being a homeowner.

Currently shopping around for home owner's insurance. USAA, Progressive, Allstate, State Farm, Liberty Mutual, and a local place called Keenan & Suggs. Still need to call a few of them.

$467/year - USAA for basic coverage (with car insurance discount)
$447/year - Progressive for slightly more coverage (with car insurance discount)
$---/year - Allstate (wouldn't give quote online, we don't feel like calling)
$739/year - State Farm for basic coverage
$907/year - Liberty Mutual for basic coverage (with USC alumni discount)
$409/year - Keenan & Suggs for basic coverage plus earthquake (requires transferring auto loan to them)
$400/year - BB&T (requires transferring auto loan to them)
$---/year - Farm Bureau (never got a call back)

The houses in this area did drop a little after the credit went away. We missed out on the credit too. It's alright though, I look at it as my way of not "mooching" from the government.

^^ Buying a nice home for the first time in a horrible economy is not in any way being a mooch...

I got the credit and I am glad. I would also be willling to bet I paid in 2x the taxes as most people on this board. I have never had any help at all so for a middle class man to catch a break is the way it should be.
