Thread: Suggestion for picture resizing function

Is there any way possible you guys can install that simple little file that will resize peoples pictures down automatically when posted?

Not a bad idea.

I dislike that forum "feature". Mostly because it resizes with a poor algorithm making the images look pixelated, and secondly because it puts ugly yellow bars and text at the top of each resized image.
I understand it helps those with small resolutions, but do we have a big problem with huge pictures?

Yes we do if you haven't noticed, I like posting large pictures and run across it all the time with other people. Works great over on my site, the resized pic always looks fine and if you dont like it you simply click the yellow bar for the full sized pic . Just trying to help out a little

I don't notice the pixelation.

I do like the auto resizing option.

The only time I've seen it make something look pixelated is when i post screen shots from my big 27" iMac, and view it on my 13" Macbook Pro.

I'll show you guys an example of the pixelation I'm talking about.

Here's the original picture. Clicky.

Here it is resized to a maximum width of 1024 pixels (since that is a common size for the resizing forum plug-in to be set, and the most favorable to the algorithm). The first image was resized using a decent algorithm. The second is using the typical plug-in algorithm.




Notice how every straight line is extremely pixelated. It is most obvious in the front hood body line but you can see it everywhere you look. The door struts, the door mirrors, pretty much where ever there is a sharp color change.
Compare that to the decent algorithm used on the first picture. There is no comparison.

I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it. Those forum resize plugins produce what I would call extreme pixelization. There is no arguing that. If you can't see it, you need glasses.

Get a plug-in with a proper resize algorithm and no freaking yellow bar and I'd be all for it.
As it stands, we have most people posting normal sized images. Huge images don't get embedded. Most people are cognizant and courteous about this. Obviously some threads have lots of huge pictures in them. I'm sorry, if you're trying to browse the Hawt Car Thread on a netbook or cell phone, you're doing it wrong. And I don't think that demographic should be catered to.
