Its hard. Spammers are getting smarter & better. Like i said in the thread before this one, make newbie posts invisible to regular members until a moderator can approve them. Thats really the only solution.

Or create a newbie section where they have to spend their first 10 posts or something.

I agree with the newbie section. It would restrict posting to a localized section so you're not hunting down spammers.

At the same time though (as shown yesterday), a spammer created 60 threads in no time, which would then allow him to post all over the damn place.

Apparently vBulletin version 3.7 has a couple new features to help if Crim wants to upgrade.

[vB 3.7] How to Reduce Spam and Registration Bots

Also here's a list of known free e-mail addresses that can be black listed from registration to help.

List of Email domains to ban

As the new spammers come in, their e-mail domains can be added to the list as well. Might help some.

The real question is, are they automated spam attacks, or is it someone in a 3rd world country being paid pennies to spam? The automated spammers are easier to take care of.

I'd hate to see us have to resort to the easy but very annoying tactics of many other forums by treating new people like lesser members.

They're likely automated. IP's don't resolve, and all registration addresses have "user" @ sina.cn suffixes.

Someone should be able to add "@sina.cn" to the e-mail registration blacklist then. Might help some. Wouldn't hurt I figure.
