Yah I don't think we even get three letter searching. It's a drag for sure.

Now you know why 60% don't search.

here's an idea...... and what I do sometimes

use google and put "sr20-forum" or "sr20forum" in the search criteria.

Last time Crim enabled 3 letter searching, it took down the site for half a day

best bet is to use *S4*.

A drag. Yes.

Uh..no. Not even close.

Ninety-eight percent (98%) do not search because they are lazy bastards. They would not know whether there was "two letter searching", "three letter searching" or "no letter searching". They would not have one (1) clue about any limitations on searching. Because they were too damn lazy to search in the first place.

i like the idea of white-listing words. works for me. i really dont have a problem with the filter, as i like to just type out descriptive words rather than use profanity to get an idea across. but to all his/her own.

Yeah the filter is lame, if it was up to me and people had some sense of sanity I'd just disable it, but obviously that isn't the case. I'll check around for a regex based filter, but those are always a pain in the ass to setup. So whats the general consensus? Keep the current set of filters? Add to it? Remove some? Or look for a better filter?

As far as the the searching, that's a limitation in our database server. I changed it 6-12 months ago, and crashed our site because it requires rebuilding indexes on the database (oops, learn something new every day right?). If that was all that was to it, I'd rebuild em and we'd be good to go. Unfortunately our server is shared with a couple other forums that help pay for our hosting, and I also crashed their forums when I made the change last time (DOH!), lets just say people were less than happy. I'll try to coordinate with the other admins to get this going tho.

To be clear, the current filter can't be augmented in any way? It filters the string of characters you input and that's it? No more intelligence to it?

If that is the case, I say at the least we could vote to take C-O-C-K off the list. Depending on how family friendly we want to be. I don't see anyone using the word to mean "penis" which I assume is why it is on the list. I don't think anyone on the forum thinks that word should be censored. Especially since 100% of the time I've seen it censored it was because it was being used non-offensively in a common, everyday word like coсkpit. I don't think we've ever had a member say something like "I'll shove my coсk down your throat until you choke if you do that two-tone, black/red paint scheme on your B14".
It's just never happened nor do I see it happening. And even if it did, I think there are better ways to deal with that.

We could have a separate thread/vote for H-O-M-O if we wanted to since I believe that is going to be less cut-and-dry.

Personally I'd love to see a "smarter" filter. I'm not against coming up with the regular expressions if it comes down to that, especially if I could start with our current list of filtered words. But I know it can get annoying to look for, implement, and tweak a new filter that may or may not be implemented well to begin with.
