Thread: New-ish 2001 Sentra SE

SO, my sister is getting a new (to her) 2001 Sentra SE 5-speed. It's only had one owner, and the guy was meticulous about keeping records of oil changes and the like. It's only got 88k miles on it, so he's got less than average mileage for our area. My sister said she saw it and it's very clean, drives great is actually quite excited to get it.

Anyway, I'm just starting this thread to see if there are any problem areas that I should make note of on the car? I know for B13s it's the door jams, rear strut towers, etc. ALSO, how can I tell if the car has LSD or not? I know that some did and some did not. IS there a letter in the VIN I should look for? I figured I'd help my sister out and see if there is anything I can note for her, see potential issues, etc. Thanks in advance guys.

Only real issue is that the MAF's are sensitive. So, keep an eye on that. If the car goes into limp mode, it's probably the MAF.

For the trans, look for the "spiderweb hump" and go for it. I checked a VIN on a trans that I went to buy and 1 person told me it was LSD and 1 person said non-LSD, so I'm not sure if the VIN tells you.

She hates automatic cars. She's 30 and has been driving stick longer than I have, so that's not happening. She was looking at an older Civic too, but she's not going to have nearly as much fun in the car, so she decided on the B15. BUT I did tell her when/if she wanted to sell it, I'd take it.

Figure if it's LSD, drop a nice built 2.2-2.4L VE in there, have a nice 4 door daily, lug the wife and kids around.

The VIN does not tell you if it has LSD.

Either get in the car and spin the wheels or jack the car up and spin the front wheels to verify if it has VLSD. Or look very carefully at the holes where the axles meet to the trans. Two different sized axle holes = 99% chance of VLSD.

All the Sentra SE's are supposed to have VLSD's in them so I am sure it has it unless someone took it out.

As someone said before, the MAF's are picky in those cars. Everything else should be good.
