To add another anecdotal story to the pool, I've been through dozens of sets of tires in the 7 years I've owned my car. Wear only ever happened on the front tires and only due to hard driving. I never got an alignment even after taking the suspension apart many times (always avoided removing the steering linkage). Tire wear was always even, controlled, and slow.
I removed the rear parallel links to install ES bushings and only then did I experience poor tread wear and that's when I got an alignment. It would be required obviously.
I don't get an alignment unless the steering tie rods are messed with or the rear parallel eccentrics are moved. No issues whatsoever.
