Need technical info!!
OK, here's the deal. I need to know if the temperature sensor that sends signal to the temperature gauge is also responable for engaging the cooling fans? I need to know because I reciently installed an instrument cluster out of a GTiR into my classic and the voltages are not the same. (Gauge reads like the car is constantly overheating!) I am going to get a tempurature sensor from a GTiR but I don't want to confuse the signal to the fans. Any info will be helpfull.

The stock temp gauge is useless, it stops at 170, does not move again until 230 with the OEM setup. Then it's too late. Do you really want to rely on that for anything?

I'm replacing mine with a techtom or similar, I regard the stock sending unit and gauge setup as not worth investing any time into - it has a dampened effect around 170, by the time the needle moves again, you're toast.

For the fans, I'd consider adding a manual override switch.

same superblackz from nissan club?

pretty much what super said. stock controls are set at extreme limits. most of the time when you get a light - its too late, in either direction.

there are 2 sensors. 1 controls the fans the other controls the gauge. when it says your over heating do your fans kick on? i have delt with no less than 3 cars were the sensor for the gauge shorts out. on my last b13 every time i hit the gas the gauge would go ape**** on me.

super black is correct. when my temp gauge says any temp from 160-210.....the stock gauge does not budge.

the very first thing i do when i buy a b13/14 is install prothains, redline gear oil, and a temp gauge. i worry about everything else when i can get to it. but those 3 things happen no less than 1 hour after i buy the car.

Where do you usually install the aftermarket gauge sender? I had a mechanical one for a while before I ganked a new cluster guage from the yard (my cluster gauge was broken before) and I had been using the cluster sender's bung for the aftermarket gauge before, but now it's obviously being used by the cluster sender.

i installed a 1/8npt taped hole in the water neck for the top rad hose.

The hole in the waterneck is where it belongs and is FAR cheaper than the Nissport piece I used that's in the top return hose. The Nissport piece is, like all their stuff, beautifully made - and you pay for it. I also used their piece on the "back" of the block for the oil pressure. As for gauges, just buy good stuff. I'm a bit partial to Autometer, so I used their stuff.

There are two sending units underneath the intake manifold on the 'front' (passenger) end of the engine in the external water manifold from the t'stat, one for the idiot gauge (two positions: "okay" and "idiot, you just screwed your engine") and the other for the signal to the ecu that turns on the fans. The fans go on EXACTLY at 212*. Sorry, been a while - I think it's the back one that sends to the idiot gauge. Don't forget to at least test if not replace your radiator cap to make sure it maintains pressure.
