Thread: Help! Tank replaced, alternate Nissan fuel pumps?

A few months back, I replaced the fuel tank on my B13 due to sludge. At the time, I was impressed that the new tank had built in baffling to prevent fuel starvation while cornering.



Now, I'm finally putting the fuel pump in (other work came first), and now I'm not impressed at all, and may actually have gotten the wrong tank, but its too late to return it.

The problem is that the stock fuel pump sits off to the side slightly, and not straight down. As a result, the fuel level float is prevented from sitting wherenit needs by the pump now. Maybe this tank was from some other Sentra model? I know later ones had a canister style pump and float assembly, maybe one of those might work? Does this style tank look familiar to anyone?

I've temporarily rigged up the pump so the float clears, but I'm not real happy with this.



I've taken the pump out its housing, and only have it held in place by a zip tie around a hose. I'm hitting the junk yard tomorrow anyway, so I'm going to do some searching before putting fuel in.

Tank is a Spectra NS9B, everything online says that this should fit the '91-94 Sentra, tank and pump are the same across trims. Tank does 'fit', but the fuel pump doesn't.

NS9B is for 1987-1993 NX, 1988-1993 sentra

NS12A is for 1991-1993 NX, 1991-1994 sentra, 1995-2015 tsuru

So I'm guessing from what years and time line, I would say NS9B is for b12 1.6 fuel pumps.

Well, when I ordered this one from Rock Auto, it was listed under the '91 SE-R, and everything indicated the tanks were interchangeable. I may have to break down and order the NS12A. I don't think I can return it since I already drilled a hole to zip tie the pump. I'm planning to email Spectra and get some info from them tomorrow.

I pulled a number of fur pumps today, nothing I found would fit that tank. I got close on one, canister style assembly I think from an '02 Maxima (not certain on that though), and it was about an inch too tall to fit.

Spectra's own web site also lists this tank for the '91 SE-R. Will wait to see what they say.

If your se-r pump dont fit int that specific tank ,
Why not just get or buy the specific canister assembly for that specific tank you just bought , instead of trying to fit the pump in the tank your trying to fit the tank in the pump

That's certainly an option, but if it is from a B12, those are impossible to find at the junk yards, and are not cheap at the auto parts stores from what I googled. And since it is going to be a track car, I'm going to want to have a spare just in case.

I'm starting to think external pump may be a better way to go unless Spectra can help me out. Then I don't have to worry as much on what fits in the tank.

I exchanged a few emails with Spectra and got the guy I was dealing with on the phone. Overall, great customer service. I had already found online their product pages, but missed where I could zoom in on the fuel tank. They had a nice shot from above, which is exactly what I needed to see their NS12A fuel tank:

It is clear that the NS12A has the fuel pump offset from the tank opening, which is exactly what is needed for this to work properly. I've got another tank ordered from Rock Auto. If I hadn't drilled the baffle on the tank I have, I'd probably have been able to return it. Expensive mistake, but could have been worse.
