SR16VE or SR20VE?? Motor swap help.
Hello everyone,

I have a 94 B13 coupe with GA16 motor and planning to swap for VE motor. I cannot decide which of the VE motors to swap for, SR16VE or the SR20VE? I am tuning the B13 for autocross and I have suspension and handling nearly complete. Please help with your opinions and suggestions, any pros and cons are welcomed to help me understand more of both motors.
Also, I live in Northern Cali and any input on smog and reregistration tips and info is greatly helpful.

do you have a sr tranny already. If not then the sr16ve might be better for you since most come with a 5 speed trann. If you do have a sr tranny already I would purchase the sr20ve since it makes more power than the sr16ve. Also the sr16ve's are usually over priced.

No SR tranny, was going to purchase motor/tranny/ecu bundle for either motor.

the sr20ve usually comes auto tranny unless you get a 20v version which will have a 6 speed. you are still going to need a sr harness for the car. you could use the sr16ve ecu or the sr20ve ecu with a b13 sr engine harness. Personally I would looked for a chipped ecu or something tunable. I ran the stock sr20ve ecu in my car for a little bit. The 7200rpm rev limiter kinda got annoying after a while.

Get the SR16 (with transmission) and swap crankshaft and pistons? Or do you not want to break the engine down prior to installing?

cortrim1: Gotcha, thanks. i will look more into that

Kyle: What is the advantages on swapping crank and pistons for SR16VE over stock SR20VE and SR20VE with crank and piston upgrade?
I am willing to disassemble and reassemble motor prior to install, if time permits. I like to take my time with things of this nature to have it done right, but would like to have something running ASAP.

You get to expand the size of the engine from 1.6L to 2.0L if you swap the 2.0L crank and rods in the 1.6L engine. They share the same bore of 86mm but the 1.6L has a stroke of 68.7mm vs the 2.0L stroke of 86mm.

As they say, there is no replacement for displacement.

OK, gotcha. Will look into this set-up as well.

Oh and also the swap will be NA powered. May or may not boost at a much later time.
