That's what I'd do. Drop the whole thing down. Kind of a pita. Definitely use the opportunity to change the water pump since there's now way I can see doing it without draining the coolant. By the time its done you might throw in a jdm motor for the same price though.

OK, off the top of my head since I just did this.

Engine and tranny will be removed as a unit through the bottom

You're going to keep the harness on the engine, and pull the main ecu connector & sub-connectors through the firewall

Up on jackstands

Remove battery & intake
Disconnect any Engine-to-chassis plugs, grounds, hoses, clutch cable etc
Remove ignitor & coil
Remove wheels
Remove axle nuts
Disconnect struts from hub
Drain all fluids
For p/s fluid, remove the 24mm bolt from the high pressure hose at the pump
Remove radiator and fans
Remove passenger side axle
If driver side axle is a bitch to remove, you can leave it in
Disconnect exhaust secondary from cat & remove downpipe
If you have a/c, remove the compressor from the engine, and hang it with a bungee cord or similar
Attach a chain to the engine - on the right side of the head, use the hole from where the ignitor mounted, and on the left front of the head, use the hole where the throttle cable bracket mounted, just to the right of the water neck
Attach engine hoist to chain and put some tension on it
Disconnect shift linkage & stabilizer bar at tranny
Remove top bolt from dogbone & center bolt from firewall mount bushing
Remove crossmember
Back out from under the car, now remove center bolt from passenger & tranny mounts, and then remove the mounts
Place dolly or scrap carpet under engine
Lower engine partially until you can pull the main harness through the firewall & into the engine bay
Disconnect electrical plug from power steering rack
Drop engine onto dolly
Disconnect hoist from engine
Loop a chain around the lower radiator support & pick the front of the car up enough to clear the engine
Put jackstands under car
Remove hoist, making room to slide engine & tranny
Slide engine & tranny out

Those are the basics. Just take your time, you should be ok.

dang man that sucks. what sucks even more is that its really really difficult to remove and reinstall the front cover assembly with the head still on the car, being the head gasket is used to seal the very top where it meets the head. due to the oil pump you cant just tweak it under the gasket and slide it on. it wont allow enough play, trust me i tried to do this on my friends 240 with an sr. I just couldnt get it to slide back in place while keeping the headgasket in place. it just wants to push foward. so all in all we ended up just taking the head off and putting a new headgasket on since he had all the parts anyways.

Its a real pita and i dont know anyone that has successfully done it withought taking the head off. It just wont give enough play to seal at the top near the head. You can give it a shot but yeah i ended up destroying that part of the headgasket at the front of the motor. It would have just leaked. so i did it the right way and removed the head. Hell even when we were pulling it off with the head on it was hard to slide out cuz there was still tension on it from just the head bolts being still tight. had to wriggle it out and right there i knew it was going to be a pain.

oh and thats really weird, ive never seen those guides crack like that. really rare right there.
