Thread: 2 years ago my car had a bad rod knock. Finally put it all back together.

I have always wanted to lift a car with a fork lift. I also like the use of a pallet jack to move the motor. You need to take the rocker arm stoppers back out they will cause massive damage if a rocker arm comes loose. I got pictures some where of a crushed rocker arm and a damaged s4 cam due to rocker arm stoppers.

lifting a car with a forklift is fun as long as its easy to balance. Where i work we do it daily, but they are restoration projects that rarely come in with a motor or trans...lol

as far as the rocker arm stoppers...they stop the rocker arms from jumping off the "track" at extended periods of time at high RPM. i believe the scarcity of the reports of rocker arm stoppers causing failures just ads more security in my eyes...100000 units sold (# out of my ass) and hearing only 3 failing...those some good odds IMO...lol But this car is a DD...no boost, no cams (as much as i would love to have those...lol) so the RAS's are a great $50 for the ease of mind on the Achilles heel of the SR20.

Rocker arm stoppers cause more damage than they prevent. I have personally worked on 5 different motors with damage due to the rocker arm getting trapped by the stopper. all had a cam that was damaged. Some of the cams were damaged to the point that they were no longer usable. I personally had a intake rocker crushed and the intake cam scored because of rocker arm stoppers. At least my intake cam was able to be saved. I would rather have the rocker arm fly off then get crushed under the cam lobe.

yep seen it on a stock motor with rocker arm stoppers. I have seen it on n/a and turbo cars alike. The funny thing is when you don't have the rocker arm stoppers the rocker arm just get thrown to the middle of the valve cover with no damage. You do get to play my favorite game called find the missing shim. Its usually sitting on a oil baffle inside the oil pan.

My take on RAS is that I'd never do one in a street (or drag) car, but for my rally car, if I end up on the side of the road because I've thrown a rocker, I'm effectively out a couple thousand in entry fees, towing, hotels, etc. At that point damage to a rocker and a cam aren't much to consider. So if the RAS covers even a small range where I would have thrown an arm and didn't, then I come out ahead.
