That's what I just said.

We know exactly why the S13 didn't came with the KA24 instead of the SR20DET.

Why is that?

Because "Americans like torque" and a dash of "Americans don't like turbocharged cars" which were both maddeningly accurate at the time. Luckily at least one of those attitudes have changed.

I'm sure it didn't hurt that the KA24 was a much cheaper engine.

Interesting. I am a regular reader of Car & Driver.... I don't know if this is true, but they said every single new BMW model that's out this year has a turbocharged option.

I've come up with another thing for my list.

30) The engine-to-chassis-to-battery ground situation would be more robust, with more than one main ground path and higher quality components with better corrosion resistance.

Joining this conversation a bit late but.... A lot of people will tell you the cost cutting bean counters at Nissan reverse engineered the SR20 as a watered down alternative to the CA18DE.

  • timing chain vs belt
  • HVLAs vs cam on bucket
  • cable vs hydraulic clutch
  • cop vs distro/wires
  • etc.

This actually speaks to the battery ground issue as well as all that nonsense in the wiring harness. A good mechanic friend of mine once showed me the wiring schematic in the SE-R FSM and showed me how all that frustrating horse-sh!t in the harness saved Nissan ~30 cents per vehicle and cost untold thousands for owners.... sigh and yet we still love these cars.

Nissan totally effed up the seat fold down. On my B12 twin cam it had a split fold seat with no cutout to load shit in so you could never get say a surfboard into the car and the seat fold down was useless. The B13 has the low trunk loading height and no split fold seat,,,, argh! Only the B14 finally has the low trunk height and folding seat that makes if actually function... The NX on the other hand is perfect

Some 4 door B13's had a split rear seat. I've toyed with the idea of joining the two split pieces from a 4 door, "wrapping" the SE-R rear seatback over, swapping the hardware for a one piece fold down. Or having an up upholstery shop swap the SE-R fabric/cushion onto the 4 door bits.

Of course the additional weight.

I honestly like the fact that the SR20 has a timing chain and wires/distributor. Strong chain, and the ignition system is simple and good already. But I would like a hydraulic clutch.

The timing chain is a major plus for me too.
