Engine Sound...Dying?
I have a B13 SE-R with 300,000 miles on it (original motor) and yesterday started to hear a ticking noise when the engine gets around 3500 and higher, I stopped going much higher than that obviously but it's a continuous tick, not really a rattle. I thought timing chain but hear nothing at idle, listening under the hood though it does come from that side of the engine bay but is definitely an internal noise. Any ideas? It seems to be louder driving under load.

I'll try to get a video clip of it.

I've been looking at replacement motors, how hard is the turbo swap? I've found them for $400 or so more than a regular SR20 replacement, if it's simple a few extra horses could be nice. lol

Thats some good mileage! I say baby it till it dies. Meanwhile pickup a ve motor, you get the extra ponies without the hassle of dealing with all the turbo stuff. I just dropped a ve into my b13, its pretty straight forward and there is plenty of info on here to help you get it done. I did mine in 2 days by myself, with all the appropriate tools of course.

Could it be valve or a valve spring ticking? That's kinda what it sounds like to me. My old 240 had that problem. Didn't affect performance or anything.

I'd go with what ^ he said though. Get yourself a nice VE. That's what I'm planning on doing. My question about the VE swap is - what's different between the two motors, aside from the obvious? Also, could I bolt the DE tranny to the VE?

Your tranny will bolt up, just make sure to swap over your dowel pins to ensure proper alignment. I forgot to do this and I have a nasty chatter now, I gotta drop the tranny tomorrow after work and put them in. The iacv purple plug from the ve harness needs to get spliced into your harness, you need a heater hose that fits perfect, there is a sticky here on it. Just do your research on here first so you know eveything about it so you don't run into any surprises.
