What year is it? That will help us know if it's mechanical or electrical.

You have a mechanical connection from the transmission to the gauge cluster.

There is a sensor on the transmission and a transmission cable connects from there up to the gauge cluster. Somewhere along the line something is broken or disconnected. I take out the gauge cluster and with the front wheels jacked up in the air, I'd have someone spin them while you see if the transmission cable on the gauge cluster end is spinning. If it is then the problem is the connection to the speedometer or the speedometer itself. If the cable isn't spinning then you know the problem is either the cable, the sensor on the transmission, or the connection between the two. Head down to the transmission and disconnect the cable from the sensor and remove the sensor. Spin the gear on the sensor and see if the sensor is working right.

I've never done this before. I have a 1994 with an electric speed sensor setup so if anyone's diagnosed this problem and has a better method don't hesitate to chime in.

its most likely the cable check and see if its broke and if so replace. Ben has the right way also you can connect the cable to a drill and try it.

easest is to just disconnect at the tranny and see if the cable pulls out the center, it will if it's broke.

Cable breakage is pretty common. But so, also, is disconnection at the back of the speedo.

if its not broken, theres like a 5% chance that it came out of the transmission, its bolted on there. I bet its popped out of the back of the cluster. lay on the floor, reach up under the dash, your hand will find its way to the back of the gauge cluster and cable(if you don't have sausage fingers) the cable has a flat spot that meshes with the spedo, other wise it wont clip in. pres it into the cluster till it clicks. It may take a few tries to line the cable up to the hole correctly...
