This has been debated for many years. Someone even recently contacted the author of an article with numbers from many years ago to try to verify his sources. You can kind of get an idea from the NX registry thread, assuming the VINs are sequential: http://www.sr20-forum.com/nx2000/61-nx-registry.html
it appears from there that there were less than 5000 in 1991, less than 7000 for 1992, and less than 5000 for 1993, with the first digit of the last 6 numbers in the VIN starting with 0, 1, and 2 for '91, '92, and '93 respectively. From experience, '92 does in fact seem to be the most plentiful year to be found.
Oh, and none were made in the US, they were all imported from Japan.

Don't seem to run across that with the 1.6's.
I understand when it's an upgraded engine but not-so-much when it's for the same engine.
I came from Mustangs and my only thought regarding this is that they've been ragged out.

A lot of cars have been boosted, tracked, etc, which leads to JDM sr20de swaps for a fresher engine when the original is destroyed or whatever. Or people have gone back to a DE motor after some botched DET or VE swap. There are many reasons for this, but it sounds like you are on the right page.
Also, 1.6 cars are less likely to be modified or swapped for an sr20 because no one wants to deal with the wiring harness issues of swapping in a completely different engine.
