Thread: Rust free my ass

That guy I remember seemed ok. I think he got the NX from the Bay Area from another member on the other forum. Anywhere near the coast you can get salt/rust. He probably didn't know but that's the obvious place to look.

rust free is a term that is thrown around way to much.

ive been around alot of nissans, especially b13's and rust free is very uncommon now adays.

NW cars are mostly rust free. Even though its really wet they will literally grow moss before they rust. I have to remind myself to check. Last year I checked out an SE-R that was practically lying in a bog. Fungus growing on the interior, mulching in the cowl/wipers ... rust free.

No, no, no, the rust was free. As in he didn't charge you for it! In all seriousness, Chris is right, it does really depend on where the car lived throughout it's life.

California is the only place Ive seen truly rust free cars...

Anything in the south or from the east usually has cancerous spots of rust somewhere, if its not blatantly obvious.

Then I guess you haven't visited Phoenix area because we have bought some of the most spotless rust-free cars from there (key is they have to have been in Phoenix area their whole life) BUT rust-free from phoenix usually goes hand-in-hand with bad sunbaked paint OR a piss-poor repaint. If it is original paint in great shape, I start to get curious about where the car came from and investigate more.

Well he had a convoluted story about how after I looked it up in carfax that it was registered in ohio but the previous owner went to school in phoenix and the car was never driven in ohio as far as he knew, and assured me it was rust free. So I took him at his word, and look what it got me. sigh.

OUCH..

That Ohio Carfax info should have been a huge warning sign IMHO. (asking for photo proof of no rust at that point of the well-known rust areas)

It is sounding like the seller either covered something up OR bought that 'not driven in Ohio' story from the previous owner he bought it from and never bothered to confirm himself?

And MINT...I hate the use of the word mint, especially when describing a 20-year-old car.



I disagree. Most of my cars have been really close to rust-free. My current car is and most of its life was from Knoxville. The weather here kills clear coats.

I bought a B13 from Indiana, and it was rusted bolt city! I will never buy another car that has lived north of Kentucky.

cars stored winters from within the rust belt are usually a totally different story FWIW but winter and salt and rust are BAD BAD BAD

HOWEVER, if not properly stored, or stored outside, then rusted bolts will happen still

..and another thing people don't think about when storing a car.. if you store your summer only car next to your daily driver in a 2-car garage, you are still exposing your 'baby' to salty wet conditions every time you drive your salt-encrusted car in and out of the garage!

I paid big money to keep my porsche in proper climate controlled winter storage away from all the elements and now have it living down in Phoenix (saves me over $2k a year in storage fees!) so it is indeed rust free (but more the exception to the rule is my guess)


The bottom line is you have to do your homework buying a car these days (especially cars 10+ years old IMHO)... ..and that is the bottom line
