Thread: purpose of TPS timing adjustment (retard)

What is the purpose of TPS timing adjustment (retard)? I understand when and how it works but why does the ecu use this feature? Seems counter productive..... Is it to help limit wheelspin if you punch it in a low gear? Im going to try it disabled and see if I notice any difference. Anyone try this and or know the or other downfalls of having this disabled?

You will see in the help that this function is the "computer electronics" equivalent of "vacuum advance", which is described pretty well in this document: Timing and Vacuum Advance 101

Thank you for this link. This allows the 72-year old kid to easier understand this new fangled ECU stuff and be capable of equating it to how he would tune cars back in his time. I look forward to sharing the link with him.

I know about timing advance and the 2 types. This is why the timing map is indexed by LOAD and RPM.

But what I am referring too is the "timing retard" setting. Why would I want to retard it??? You want to advance it.

I read the blurb in the help and all it says is "if the rpm is between 600 and 3000 and the throttle is opened quickly, timing will be retarded this amount". There is settings for the amount of timing to be retarded. (15deg) is stock.

I can't find any reference to your quoted info in the help. What exactly is the name of the parameter you're referring to?

No wonder I couldn't find it. That's dinosaur stuff . In any event, it's the same thing as described above.

So I'm still wondering why the ecu uses this? Mine is set at "0" retard right now. I don't really notice much if anything going on.

Is this a feature you added Dave or just kept from the stock ecu code and left it alone?

Can someone give me a scenario and why I need this "on" example: helps reduce pinging when snapping the throttle or help reduce wheel spin on quick accel

Timing should advance with rpm/load regardless of "fast accel tip" and not retard the timing am I wrong?
