Timing mode?
Would this:

Also cause the car not to go into timing mode using the software?

No, it would still go into timing mode.

BUT if you are not seeing any live data, then that is an issue that needs to be corrected before you go much further. You can't tune very well if you don't have any relevant engine data.

(ALSO PLEASE NOTE: After enabling the set timing mode you must click on the MAIN screen to make the upload changes to the emulator work. If you select it from the drop down menu and hit ctrl U right after, it will NOT upload your change to the emulator!)

Took me awhile to figure that one out.

Yes.. it will definitely be simplified in the new software!

is there a how-to for timing? and what my limits are? can I set it to 17, 18 or 19 degrees? or am I limited to physically setting it at 15 like with a JWT ECU, and just letting the ECU do the work??

Well, you can change the base time in the software. I imagine all calculations are made off of that base time. You can set it to whatever you like, but the performance gains are generated from the difference in your physical timing and what the ECU is expecting. e.g. You'll be 2* advanced only if your physical base time is set to 17* and the ECU is expecting it to be at 15*...

Also, the timing you set depends on a lot more than your tune. If you're running aftermarket cams (like S4's or BC2's) you'll def. want to keep base time at 15*....

Just my 2 cents.

its a VE, currently stock cams, but i will have N1 cams installed in the near future

You need to look around about the N1 cams... If it's anything like any other high performance cams, they will need 15* base timing... I don't think it would be necessary to advance the timing on aftermarket cams anyway... they'll already be giving you a good boost in HP.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but you might be able to retard the timing in the software just a bit... so that the physical timing on the motor (for clearance reasons) doesn't change, but you might get a little more power by making the ECU think your timing is retarded physically... something to check out, perhaps. John???
