Original Owner B13 1991 Sentra SE-R - Restore or Release?
Hi All:
I'm the original owner of a B13 1991 Sentra SE-R with 170k miles on it. A year ago, I passed this car on to my son who failed to keep up the maintenance on it and now the engine is toast. So now comes the question: is the car worth enough to put the time/money into it to restore, or should I put it out to pasture? The car hasn't been driven hard as I still have the original clutch and no 5th gear pop-out.
I had started to go down the path to pull the engine to get it rebuilt, but the guy who was going to do that for me wound up under-quoting what it would cost that that has busted the engine budget. I then started looking at JDM engines as an alternative and I've read both good and bad experiences.
So the question of the forum is: have folks used JDM engines and if so, which vendors seem to provide the better engines? Is this the best route to go down? I just want a stock high-port, no tweaks.
While it is a NY car, it only has some small rust areas which could easily be remedied, along with a few other dings and dents. The challenge is not to put tons of $$ into it between engine, body work, and "I 'otta replace this while I'm in here" things vs. what the $2k-$3k used prices would support.
Pros/cons?
