New from Ny and new to the nissan SeR (other one got messed up)
Hey guys my name is John, I'm here for a few reasons. I'm in the market for a 93/94 B13 seR, to learn as much as I can about these cars and to meet great people who have experience with these vehicles. A lil background on me, I own a 2012 Subaru Sti which recently broke the world record for fastest stock turbo Sti. I'm typically a Subaru and Honda guy but I've done Hondas and really not trying to go threw the hassle of making sure nothing is stolen, swaps are done right, rust etc. etc. (but i still love them dearly). My Subaru is obviously my race car so need a daily driver. The car went to a full race car very quickly, quicker than i intended it to. As it sits its fully gutted, kirkey drag seat, drag radials and I think you guys get the point LOL. So i was in the market for a Honda and wanted something pretty much done just as a fun daily but than I came across the B13 SeR and I just love everything about it. The shape of it, the stock lsd trans, the motor etc. So i just have some questions about them and what I'm looking for when i purchase one. If anyone has a car for sale please feel free to leave your name and number and i will contact you and we will go from there.

THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO READ THIS AND TAKES THE TIME TO ANSWER MY QUESTIONS I KNOW THERE IS ALOT!

What I'm looking for!

Original B13 SeR (not swapped completely original)
Color is not an issue
lowest mileage possible
slightly modded ( head, bolt ons etc. but if built great)
NO TURBOS PLEASE (I have a turbo car wanna have an all motor car for fun on the street)

What I wanna Know!

Motor problems
tranny problems
recalls
chassis issues (rust/suspension)
best suspension
what mods are a must
what suspension mods are a must
how can I tell an original b13 ser
chassis reinforcement
best exterior companies/mods
best interior companies/mods
power levels of n/a motors with just bolt ons
power levels of n/a motors with head packages w/bolt ons
best head packages
1/4 mile times of n/a w/head work and bolt ons (pump)
best drag radial size (stock wheels)
how much power can the motor hold before internals must be built
is 94 best year for the b13 or other years tend to be better
best tuner/builder in tri-state area
can stock ecu be used to tune car or do i need a chip/stand alone/ other ecu from different year
best website for aftermarket and o.e.m pieces

Welcome fellow Scoobie owner! Post up a WTB thread, that way people notice it more.

I'll do my best at answering your questions, as I was buying my Subaru, I wish I would have asked/easily found same questions/answers.

Motor problems
Nothing major, keep ontop of oil levels and the SR20 motor will run for ever. You may need to replace a timing chain pensioner and remove the chain guide though.

tranny problems
B13 tranny's suck, they have a 5th gear popout issue and are weak. NA it might be fine, but boosted you can break them fairly easily.

chassis issues (rust/suspension)
Rust can be a real issue, one of the major spots is in the door wheel by the dash.

best suspension
Go straight to coilovers, even China (BC/Megan) ones will do better then AGX's with drop in springs

what mods are a must
Header, 91 intake cam (esp if you get a 94), replace stock airbox (don't even need to replace stock piping), waterpump pulley (stock cavitates below 7k rpm). Crank pulley can help, or light flywheel. It's all about how much you want to dish in.

what suspension mods are a must
Depends on how much you care about handling, coilovers will serve you well, but bigger rear swaybar, roll center restoration might help you too (custom work for these cars sadly)

chassis reinforcement
Yes! B13 is the lightest out of all SR20 engined chassis, part of this is because of thin metal. Thus chassis reinforcement will help if you do more then daily drive it. May I suggest you looking into P10 G20's? They have a much stiffer chassis and better (not mac strut) front suspension.

power levels of n/a motors with just bolt ons
Stock you will start out at about 120whp on a good engine (94+ SR20's), header is good for 6-10whp, removing airbox is good for about 6whp. 91 SE-R intake cam will get you about 8-10whp, 91 intake cam has the most lift/duration out of all years thus helps power a ton on newer motors.

power levels of n/a motors with head packages w/bolt ons
best head packages

Head packages? We don't generally have to do any major head work on stock motors. 91-93 has a high port motor (injectors above plenum). 94-99 has low port motors, injectors below plenum, these heads flow a good bit better then 91-93, not worth the trouble if your highport motor is working fine.

Max power you can expect from a pretty full built motor, with aftermarket cams is about 200whp.

If you swap in an SR20VE, you start with 160whp, and you can expect around 200whp with header, cams, intake and 3" exhaust.

how much power can the motor hold before internals must be built
SR20's are built to be turbo motors. In stock form they can handle up to 400whp with a good tune. If you get a stock turbo SR20DET (must import), it can handle more due to additional turbo improvements that Nissan did.

is 94 best year for the b13 or other years tend to be better
I believe 94 is the fastest, it technically has the lowport head which flows more cfm but has smaller intake cam. Swap in 91 intake cam and bam 8whp gained. Any year is good year for B13 though.

can stock ecu be used to tune car or do i need a chip/stand alone/ other ecu from different year
You can use stock ECU for all of the above mods (intake cam, header, intake). You only need to worry about your ECU if you change MAF or injectors. Stock MAF is good for about 250whp, stock injectors and fuel pump is good for about 200whp. You don't have to worry about maxing them out unless you do some serious work or turbo.

You have to chip these ECU's with a daughterboard to get a different tune. There are few tuning options: JWT for pretuned ECU's that you pay $100 for every retune, NismoTronic NEMU real time ecu that you can self tune that runs custom firmware for more tunable options, or NisTune which offers basic (burning chips) or realtime ecu's, but runs OEM firmware with much less tunability.

I personally have been using NismoTronic ECU for my cars, which I definitely have been spoiled by, using Romraider is painful in comparison...

best website for aftermarket and o.e.m pieces
Greg V (forum supporter) has a good all in one spot for mods and oem parts. G Spec Performance

Other then that it's here and there vendors/sites, sadly we don't have the aftermarket of Subaru or Honda.

Thanks, I like very well organized individuals and posts, thus it's easier to help when you did most of the work with questions . Now I didn't answer all questions because I've never owned a B13, only B14+, thus I'll leave it to a more qualified individual to answer.

Max power you can expect from a pretty built motor, with aftermarket cams is about 200whp. If you swap in an SR20VE, you start with 160whp, and you can expect around 200whp with header, cams, intake and 3" exhaust.

Also keep in mind these motors love to breathe, don't be scared of running a 3" exhaust even NA.

Here is my general mod path on simple NA builds
SS Header - $100-150 - Something like this, just make sure it's a 2.5" merge collector and throw away the gaskets they are trash. When you switch to an SS header your O2 sensor will have issues with grounding (SS less conductive then cast iron), to fix that, get a 4 wire Bosch 15727 sensor and ground it on your intake manifold
Cams - $50 - 91 intake cam is hard to beat $50 for 8whp, can be found on these forums. If you want more power JWT S3's and JWT S4's are about $500 new and good for 12-15whp.
Intake - $60 - I usually just run a maf adapter, a BPi Flow stack and S&B powerstack filter. If you get a JWT Popcharger it will bolt up directly to your MAF.
Exhaust - $300 - I will generally just run the stock exhaust because I like quiet, but VRS has some bolt-in exhaust options check with @LikeTheMovies for pricing, there is also Mandrel Bent Systems, and a few others, eBay exhausts will work too
Pulleys - $160 - UR Pulleys are good, crank and waterpump set. Good for about 5whp, so price to whp gain is definitely low.
Spark Plugs - I like to squeeze power, and MPG's, thus I sidegap and index all of my plugs (even on the scooby). Also now days I only run Iridium's, extra life in them is worth it. I would run heat range 6, though you might need 7's if you go heavy on the mods.
Advance Ignition Timing - Here is a "free" mod, you can advance your base timing from 15* to 19* and gain some additional power, you will need 91-93 gas though.

All of the above mods can be done on the stock ECU with no issues.

Outside of that to gain more power your going need to start building, ported intake manifold, ported head, higher compression (stock is 9.5:1)

An ECU will also free up some power and help the mods you do add, check out the Nismotronic NEMU ecu. Obviously you can go crazy but even a set of JWT S4 cams with the other bolt ons would be a fun daily.

I like the subi, seems to hook nice. You should get a harness bar and a 4 or 5 point harness for some safety.
